Code by Example, helps me to learn quickly

Just started into this book, as a seasoned developer in other languages, and so opened up my WebStorm evaluation editor and started coding in Chapter 1, the example in the book. I had an issue getting it going, and admittedly am a bit light in my Javascript method inheritence, so when I got an error running the node program, and being unsure of myself, I was stuck.
It was very refreshing to look in the front of the book, find the information about the Google blog for the book and be able to post a message to ask for help. What really was impressive, is to have the author Alex get back to me within a few hours. Wow!
(The problem was "my bad", and was an obvious omission/mistake on my part in entering the code), the code printed in the book was correct.
Fixed it, and the example worked like a charm. Chapter 1, behind me I am
looking forward to working my way through the rest of the text, and learned a lot (like about streams in NodeJS) just by typing int the first example.
This is not a beginner's book, but for me, this is a great way to get your hands on the code, quickly and I learn best by keying in code and gaining confidence and stepping through code (versus just reading). Thanks Alex!

Great book for developers ready to learn the Node core

I have read many Node books, with satisfaction, but they tended to direct their coverage toward UI and database frameworks and applications. This new book concentrates on Node itself, taking a deeper dive with a narrower focus.

This is an intermediate level book, for those with some Node experience, who are ready to learn about the Node core that is used as the basis of the more familiar frameworks and libraries the application developer normally encounters.

The examples are short (my favorite kind), but rich with thought provoking technique that teaches idiom and leads to greater understanding of why things are done the way they are in quality Node modules.

This book will appeal to systems software engineers who will quickly recognize Node as an abstraction on top of Unix, designed to simplify asynchronous use of sockets and other system services. If you read and study this book carefully, you will be prepared to design and develop Node applications and library modules that are useful far beyond stock in trade UI and database applications.

The book does venture into Express, outside the Node core, but in a useful, limited fashion that concentrates on the use of Node and Express to develop REST APIs. This is a very common use case for Node that needs more real world coverage and exposition of best practices.

Node.js in Practice is my new favorite Node book. Highly recommended.

A well-focused guide to understanding and using the Node.js web development platform

I have had a long-term, love-ignore relationship with Node.js. I have taken Node classes, read Node books, and tinkered with Node programming both on Windows and Linux machines. Sometimes I have loved working with Node.js. Other times, I have ignored it for months at a stretch while I rush around trying out other choices and development distractions.

Node.js in Practice is aimed at intermediate Node.js programmers and even advanced Node.js programmers. There is some awareness that beginners also may be reading this book. So the authors start by explaining Node from the standpoint of "what it is, how it works, and why it's something you can't live without." Then they quickly recommend that Node newcomers should put this book aside for now and read another good, but more basic, how-to book first: Node.js in Action.

In Node.js in Practice, the learning curve can start getting steep fairly quickly, especially for those of us who have worked somewhat superficially with Node in web projects that also involve other software (such as the MEAN stack: MongoDB, Express and AngularJS, plus Node). Fortunately, the authors, Alex Young and Marc Harter, take a very focused, three-part approach that keeps Node.js centered in the spotlight and promotes deeper understanding.

Part One focuses on "Node's core fundamentals" and "what's possible using only Node's core modules (no third-party modules)." Part Two moves into "real-world development recipes" and shows how to "master four highly applicable skills--testing, web development, debugging, and running Node in production." Some third-party modules also are introduced. Part Three, meanwhile, emphasizes "creating your own Node modules in a straightforward manner that ties in all kinds of ways to use npm commands for packaging, running, testing, benchmarking, and sharing modules. It also includes helpful tips on versioning projects effectively."

The book offers "115 techniques...each module covering a specific Node.js topic or task, and each divided into practical Problem/Solution/Discussion sections." I really like this approach, and the illustrated discussions that accompany each short code example have been especially helpful for me.

It has been a pleasure to upgrade to the latest version of Node.js recently and reconnect with it by using this new book. Despite my previous experience with Node.js, I see that I still have a lot to learn! My thanks to Manning for providing a review copy of Node.js in Practice.

Douglas C. Lovelace, Jr., is the Director of the Strategic Studies Institute at the U.S. Army War College. Earlier in his military career, he worked on national security directives. He holds an MBA degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a J.D. from Widener School of Law.

With each postcard comes a little vignette of the boy's new friends engaging in typical activities for that time and place, with one child being showcased at the end of each section. The text is appropriately simple-"Patrick spears a barramundi" needs no embellishment for dramatic effect-and serves primarily to support the illustrations. Lester's watercolor and fine black-line creations are crisp and engaging. They portray happy children having fun and at the same time convey a wealth of information about life in Arnhem Land. This is a nicely designed, informative, and enjoyable addition, perfect for use with multicultural units. Ages 4-7. The gang from Celeste Sails to Spain (1999) and other adventures returns in this entertaining picture book. This time the friends bid farewell to Ernie as he departs for a year's stay in Arnhem Land, an aboriginal reserve in Australia's Northern Territory. Ernie writes each of his six friends a letter describing one of Arnhem Land's six seasons and relating the activities of his new friends. Lester's colorful, snapshot-size illustrations depict the activities, a few familiar (catching frogs and playing football) and many new and different. The ending double-spread shows Ernie's American friends playing Arnhem Land style: "Celeste is a stilt dancer. Clive wears body paint. Rosie makes damper." There isn't a lot of information here, but the book provides bits and pieces about the climate and some aspects of the aboriginal culture. A glossary explains new terms. Lauren Peterson

We have had so much fun reading these books over the years...with each new release we have enjoyed them all over again. Even though my kids have long outgrown them from an age perspecitve, we still joke about when Nikki will get her own title! Ms. Lester...you have given Frank, Clive, Rosie, Tessa, Celeste and Ernie their time in the limelight...it is now time to give Nikki her chance to shine!

This book is about a little boy who fly to Australia where his parents are working. He sends letters to his classmates home in America to let them know of all the things he is doing. My girls loved the story. A very cute book for learning about another culture, in this case the Aborigines of Australia.

Fa-Long Luo, Element CXI, San Jose, California
Dr. Fa-Long Luo is an IEEE Fellow and the Chief Scientist of two leading international companies, headquartered in Silicon Valley, dealing with software-defined radio and wireless multimedia. He is also an Affiliate Full Professor at the University of Washington.� From 2007 to 2011, he was the founding editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Digital Multimedia Broadcasting. From 2011 to 2012, he was the chairman of the IEEE Industry DSP Standing Committee and technical board member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. He is now associate editor of the IEEE Access and IEEE Internet of Things Journal. Charlie (Jianzhong) Zhang is Vice President and head of the Standards and Research Lab with Samsung Research America at Dallas, where he leads research and standard efforts for 5G cellular systems and next generation multimedia networks. From Aug 2009 to Aug 2013, he served as the Vice Chairman of 3GPP RAN1 working group and led development of LTE and LTE-Advanced technologies such as 3D channel modeling, UL-MIMO and CoMP, Carrier Aggregation for TD-LTE, etc. Before joining Samsung, he was with Motorola from 2006 to 2007 working on 3GPP HSPA standards, and with Nokia Research Center from 2001 to 2006 working on IEEE 802.16e (WiMAX) standard and EDGE/CDMA algorithms. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Zhang is also an IEEE Fellow.

Angie Radtke is a member of Joomla!’s design and accessibility team. An accomplished web designer, she developed the Beez 2.0 and Beez 5 templates for barrier-free design that are now included in the Joomla! package. Her consultancy, Der Auftritt, specializes in creating targeted communication solutions for web and print. If you develop Joomla templates, you need this book

Finally, a book on Joomla templates written by a member of the official Joomla project, Angie Radtke.

If you have used Joomla, you already know Angie's work. She designed and developed the Beeze templates that come installed with every Joomla distribution since Joomla 1.5.

This book does a great job looking under the hood of Joomla's template architecture. She goes over how to tweak templates with CSS, how to use template overrides, a chapter covering MooTools basics, and how to modify the Beeze templates that come with Joomla. If you already develop Joomla templates, you need to buy this book because it will greatly expand your skill-set.

I have been developing custom Joomla templates since 2007 and this book taught me several new tricks, like how MooTools works, create better error pages and best ways to modify the CSS used in Joomla error messages, etc.

What the book doesn't do is provide step-by-step instructions on how to create a Joomla template from scratch. (Although there are plenty of good online tutorials that can show you how.) I would not recommend this book to Joomla newbies and folks who do not have a good understanding of CSS and HTML. You don't need to know PHP and JavaScript to get a lot from this book, but it certainly helps if you do.

Overall a great book that deserves a place in every Joomla developer's library.

Agonizing - a definite "skip"

Agonizing.

This book is about Joomla templates, right? It says so right on the cover. So, out of 278 pages of real "stuff" (excluding introduction, index, appendix), why are the first 90 pages devoted to everything but Templates?

Author Angie Radtke has great qualifications, but if I wanted to know her opinion about website accessibility, color balance, PHP basics, CSS and HTML basics, the aesthetics of font selection, and general website design advice, I'd have bought a book about, oh say, "Website Design."

Here are some things I just don't need to be told in a book about Joomla templates:
- "In many cases the choice of colors is determined in advance by the corporate design of the client."
- "People who are blind tend to have well-developed acoustic as well as tactile senses..."
- "Firebug is one of the most glorious inventions for template designers."

With that said, the other 180 pages of the book do a pretty good job of explaining the role of templates and how to use them. The last 60 pages walk the user though a productive, detailed exercise of designing the front end of a Joomla website and illustrate template use in a rewarding way. If anything, those 60 pages are the nugget of value in this book. (In fact, if I had to take a guess, I'd say Ms. Radtke wrote the last 180 pages, was told by the publisher to make it longer to justify the target size and price of the book, and that she then added the first third, but that's just me.)

I took my lumps on this one and proceeded to the Joomla "Programming" book in the same series, which I liked very much, so I haven't searched more for templates-only guides on Joomla.

An odd mix of the elementary and the complex

I'm a beginning level web developer who has created a basic Joomla website but wanted to learn how to customize a template for increased style control. I've looked at several Joomla! templates and found that they are typically composed of many different files, making it almost impossible to figure out where to start*. I was hoping that this book on Joomla templates might explain how these are typically set up, but was disappointed in this.

Many rather basic topics are covered in this book, but Radtke often inexplicably uses advanced undefined terms and concepts in the midst of elementary explanations, leaving beginners in the dust. For instance, on page 37,in the context of the introduction of HTML5, Radtke says "The new semantically significant elements are particularly interesting," with no further explanation (I have a clue, but this could have been stated in much plainer language). On page 38, when she explains that css statements can be added in external files (already knew that!), she provides a code sample to accomplish this, but doesn't mention where this code would be placed among the many template files. A brief explanation of how style sheets are integrated into a Joomla website would have been nice here. It is also unfortunate that while this book was copyrighted in 2013, it does not discuss either of the default templates packaged with Joomla!3 (released in 2013), but instead deals with the old Beez2.

As there are not very many reference books available for Joomla!, this is still a useful reference for those of us who prefer to learn by reading. The table of contents shows the broad scope of this book, and dutiful perseverance will still reward relative beginners with some information useful at that level. However, it could (and should) have been so much better....

*A refreshing exception is Jaxstorm-Blue, with all of its css in one file, making it a good learner's tool.
