Review
A psychoanalyst in private practice, Charles provides an adroit exploration of the ways in which literature and clinical work often function as mappings of the same terrain—terrain that is at once intellectual, emotional, and behavioral. By bringing her work with patients in sync with her readings of literary texts—by writers from Herman Melville to Virginia Woolf to John Fowles—the author is able to look at the human condition, and the lived lives of her patients, from a vantage point outside the individual therapeutic case. Literature and literary metaphor afford Charles a mode of inquiry that has the special capacity to highlight the structures and patterns that underlie the particulars of a person's life. Charles's investigations of texts and lives crosses the territory of sensory experience, trauma, dreams, relatedness, and identity issues related to the collision of culture, aging, and death. One strength of the book is the author's refusal to pathologize the individual dilemmas playing out in her consulting room; she always sees her patients' lives as part of the larger human condition that literature has mapped independent of the healing arts and sciences. This book will have great appeal to those whose interests are humanistic, clinical, and philosophical, whatever the level of preparation. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals; general readers. (Michael Uebel, University of Texas CHOICE)

"Marilyn Charles unites the dimensions of literature and clinical encounters, creating a fresh perspective of their mutually illuminating interplay. Exploring the value of the unconscious, dreams, myths and metaphors, this precious volume brims with transformative wisdom. Charles conveys the poetry of life’s journey, directing us to live fully, in the experience of mind, body and world and to open deeply to pain and pleasure, trauma and insight––from birth to death." (Danielle Knafo, Ph.D., Long Island University, author of Dancing with the Unconscious)

“Marilyn Charles has given us a profound work, a writing clearly destined to become a classic in contemporary psychoanalytic thinking. Her powerful, deeply creative, moving, and accessible prose carries us from literature to dreams to the clinical experience, with an unparalleled intellectual grace and spacious depth of feeling. She succeeds in her effort ‘to understand some essential patterns at the core of the dilemma of being human.’ This is truly a remarkable book that will leave a deep and lasting impression on our field and beyond.” (Paul Lippmann, Ph.D., William Alanson White Psychoanalytic Institute)

“Readers from many fields—clinical, academic, and non-professional—will be enriched by this book. With her emphasis upon metaphor, creativity, and the discovery of human experience, Marilyn Charles explores literary and psychoanalytic relations with fresh, sensitive, and smartly subtle intelligence.” (Marshall Alcorn, PhD, George Washington University)

From the narratives of The Stories We Live, one cannot fail to appreciate Marilyn Charles’s devotion to psychoanalysis….This book shows exquisite breadth in its choices and illuminations of psychoanalytic foundations and directions. Her case studies shadowed by literary tales, bring analysis very close to the reader.… [who] is necessarily engaged with Charles’s love of psychoanalysis, her love of literature, and her fidelity to her patients. (Kareen Malone, PhD, University of West Georgia)

Marilyn Charles is noted for her efforts to translate dense psychoanalytic terms into language that is accessible and clinically relevant. In Psychoanalysis, Literature, and Life: The Stories We Live, she pairs case vignettes with examples from literature to highlight essential human struggles that play out in the consulting room. This pairing de-pathologizes those struggles and offers a conceptual framework that can help the clinician facilitate these journeys of discovery.

that pays good, is flexible
By Stacey Crummie
I bought this book was curious about the punch line. I expected that it was going to be around not following the standard process, but also that it would lead to what your process should then be to replace it. I was waiting for that punch line. It never came. The premise of the book is that you shouldn't follow the old standard go to school or learn a trade, then work for the rest of your life doing things you don't want to. That would lead one to believe that the punch line would be - find what you REALLY want to do, and do that - and here is how to discover what that it. The most important part of this book should have been - discover what it is, but instead the book just abruptly ends after, don't follow the standard education system. I've been studying people for a long time, and I'll say right up front, NOT following the system, for most people is a HUGH mistake. The reason is that, if you talk to a lot of people about their lives, you find out that most people don't have a freaking clue what they want to do "when they grow up". No clue. No - I always wanted to be a ninja, or study seals, or whatever. I would say 90% simply don't have that type of thinking pattern. They simply aren't designed to creatively thing in that way, nor do they want to. What they do want is a job (cause you got to eat), that pays good, is flexible, has good benefits to pay those medical bills, and isn't a bad commute if possible. Relying on starting a business or pursuing modeling, or whatever else most likely isn't going to cut it. You have to be of a special breed to first of all have big dreams, and secondly having been at the right place and the right time for them to work out (that actually has a LOT to do with it). I've seen SO many people that are struggling because they did not pursue the "system" and instead winged it. They have no plan, nor will they. Just not in them to come up with it. So, you better stick to the system or your FIRST 40 years isn't going to be so hot.

Great Read, Just Wish it was Longer.
By kpoling
I have read some scathing reviews of Mark Messick's books, but I think they are pretty unfair after reading this. I really liked this book, and even though he doesn't go really in-depth with it, it's not like that would make the objective any different. I would say he's really more of a master of the obvious, and that is refreshing.

Why do we just blindly accept, for example, that work can't be fun, we have to hang on to jobs we hate as if our lives depended on it, and life has to be so busy that we can't even enjoy ourselves? I am in my 30's and, knowing the author is a 16-year-old kid, kind of wondered what kind of life experience he might have to draw upon. But reading this reminded me of when I was 15 and told my dad that my ambition was to be a writer and fine art painter. I thought he would be proud of me and approve, but instead he freaked out. He said that wasn't real work, and lots of other things that hurt me deeply. I take it that he believed that real work is a job you hate. I wish I had this book back then. I might have realized why he reacted that way and had compassion for him while still developing the courage to seriously pursue my career, even at that young age, as the author did. That might have greatly improved our relationship and prevented lots of resentment and frustration, not to mention made me more money. So yes, just because the information in this book is pretty obvious doesn't make it invalid.
Knowing something is one thing, but using that knowledge to create change in your life is something completely different. That's why the book doesn't need to be longer. I want it to be longer so I can keep sitting on my couch and go, "That's fascinating!" instead of coming up with ways to implement some of the really obvious solutions I just read or using my brain to creatively problem-solve. One point the author brings up is we don't use our brains enough to creatively solve problems, like how to earn income doing what we love, or how to get out of a stressful situation, or how to have fun doing things you have to do but don't enjoy, like the dishes.

So this was a good, though short, book with lots of advice in it that seems stupidly obvious, but if it's so obvious, why don't more people take it? I think that's proof that the system the author talks about is certainly real, and is brainwashing us right now.

BTW, the workbook that comes with this book is a great resource that starts off the creative problem solving process by keeping this from being a passive read and cementing some of these ideas through the writing process, which also helps to personalize the content. I'm glad I read this book because it was really inspiring, and the author's enthusiasm really energized me. Who knows, it may even represent the most important dollar I've ever spent! Kudos.

BEING STUPID ON PURPOSE HAS SOME GREAT LIFE LESSONS.
By Scott B. Allan
I was sucked into this book from the beginning. If you ant to do what you wnat to do and just say "To Hell With the What They Say," then you gotta read this book. Mark Messick doesn't pull his punches here as he sets up readers for a journey on how being stupid [that is to say, going against all comon advice that sucks because it pulls you into a trap] just isn't a good idea if you wanna be free.

As I read through this book I started to ask myself this question: "What would I do if I could do absolutely anything?" and then I took it another step: "What would I do with my life if I could it right now?" As you read this book, you'll start to question "the system" that Mark clearly lays out...and it is so true that I found myself cringing as I was reading it. As he points out, the system is so ingrained into us from the beginning that nobody questions it. "Yes, I'm going to work in a job I hate for the next 40-50 years, and there is nothing wrong with that. I'll be perfectly fine."

If anything, this little book is a wake up call, and that's why I liked it. It's not about "how to be more productive" so you can do a job you hate only better. It's not about saving money so you'll have more to give the government when you retire. Nope. This book is about FREEDOM.It's about ignoring the system and being free by ignoring all conventional advice that sucks you into a system that is restrictive, boring and adds nothing of value to your life as it slips away day by day.

The other important point the author makes is that you can only really rely on yourself: nobody else. No system will save you and no other human being will save you from the system if they are trapped in it themselves. He backs this up with the TOP 13 ways that the system has lied to you [us] and messed with our brains. They are:

- Being different is bad
- Thinking outside the box is stupid
- Other people control your happiness
- Your job should be "work"
- RElazation is a sign of insecurity
- Education ends after college
- Work should be your top priority
- A sedentary lifestyle is normal
- It's okay to hide behind technology
- Stress is normal
- Everyone should listen to me
- Your only suppose to have fun in certain situations
- Fate controls your happiness

All of these "little lies" are golden lessons that teach people to "Be Yourself" and "Master Your Own Mind" because you are in control of how you think and feel. Always.

Mark ends the book with a positive message to everyone to change just one thing...just one. Go out an do it today. And then tomorrow. And the next day.

In a nutshell this book is well worth the prive you'll pay for it and, despite the fact it isn't very long, it has great content and you'll walk away feeling you invested your time wisely.

FROM THE PREFACE:

"My elder brother, John B. Noss, spent ten years preparing the first edition of this book (published in 1949). His preface to the first edition spoke of two special needs to be met: to include descriptive and interpretative details from the original source materials, and to bridge the interval between the founding of religions and their present state ....The study of world religions needs to encompass the immediate and the existential as well as the rational; the empathic as well as the analytical. Serving as the editor of John's book has been, on the one hand, a challenge to emend each inaccuracy and enhance each strength, but also a profound experience of what it is like to look out on the world through the eyes of a wise person."

Just as the Nazi Holocaust incinerated naive assumptions about human nature and historical progress, so the flaming collapse of the World Trade Center in 2001 shattered assumptions about status quo, religion, and peace.

Those of us who inquire into the history of the world's religions soon become aware that from the perspective of some of the religions the study of history is bound to be fruitless. Religions are about "what matters most" and to some that means transcending the temporal and in effect abandoning the search for meaning in the historical scene. Picking up a book like this may signify a desire to confirm that view, but it is more likely to signify a kind of bias, an underlying hope that the transcendent/immanent may indeed manifest itself in historical events—that the study of any religion should include its historical influence in social/political arenas as, for example, ethical policy in regard to the earth's resources and the degree to which all of humankind is in its purview. Given our biases, our best course is to try to present the views of others fairly. Will knowledgeable believers find our characterizations accurate?

My elder brother, John B. Noss, spent ten years preparing the first (1949) edition of this book. At that time he found that most publications in the field tended to focus on the biographies of the founders and then jumped to comparing and evaluating the religions' contemporary practices. His preface to the first edition spoke of two special needs to be met: the first was to include "descriptive and interpretative details from the original source materials" and second "to bridge the interval between the founding of religions and their present state" (italics mine).

Those who have used successive editions will recognize an increasing attentiveness to those needs. Primary source materials are not spliced in as undigested chunks but carefully embedded in interpretative commentary. Now color-highlighted, and sometimes further emphasized in color-framed quotations, the sources gain even more of the prominence they deserve. Illustrations have come to play a larger part: in addition to classic art and architecture, there are now depictions of ceremonial realia and explanations of ritual practices. Extended teaching captions go beyond the perfunctory identifications of the subjects.

Resisting trends toward the abbreviating and "dumbing down" of college textbooks to accommodate diminished reading skills, this edition maintains a standard of thoroughness. Instead of abridgement, it offers enhancements: highlighted terms keyed to chapter-end glossaries, reinforcement of key ideas in color-framed quotations, line drawings to relieve solid columns of text, and the inclusion of some novels and light reading suggestions in the bibliography.

Many teachers find a kind of liberation in putting a thorough text in the hands of students. This ensures a ready and reliable reference, relieves the pressure on the instructor to "cover" everything in lectures, and frees up the class time for questions and discussions on topics of immediate interest.

The author is grateful for editorial assistance and expertise in ancient intellectual history generously contributed by David J. Noss of Washington, D.C. Special thanks are also due to Ross Miller, Carla Worrier, and Louise Rothman of Prentice Hall and to Lee Shenkman and Janet Stone of Victory Productions.

but am still happy that I took the course on world religion
By thirstybobo
I was required to take a class on religion as a prerequisite for a nursing program I applied to. I ended up choosing a different program, but am still happy that I took the course on world religion. The course, and this book especially, opened my eyes about many of the world's religions. It made me a more open-minded person, and taught me a lot about religion and culture. The lessons I learned from this book and class are priceless. I truly think the world would be a better place if everyone read this book and developed a bigger level of understanding about different faith backgrounds.

This book will fall apart just looking at it.
By L. A. Moore
Paperback binding looks like it was glued by a preschooler. (Previous repair?) Cover and pages are loose, creased, slight tearing around all edges, dog ears on every corner, markings, found post it's still sticking out of the sides of the book!!!! This book should not have been rented out again. It should have been replaced with a stronger book.
