A Karger 'Publishing Highlights 1890–2015' title
Algorithms provide a logical, concise and cost-effective approach to medical reasoning: utilizing a concise, step-by-step approach based upon clues from the history, physical examination and laboratory studies, algorithms help avoid excessive unnecessary procedures and testing. The 2nd, revised edition of Practical Algorithms in Pediatric Endocrinology deals with practical issues of child growth, puberty, diseases of the endocrine glands, sexual differentiation, as well as aberrations of water, electrolyte, mineral and carbohydrate metabolism. Fifty clinical issues are covered by an algorithmic approach, breaking down long lists and tables of differential diagnosis into smaller, more manageable ones. Common clinical symptoms, signs and laboratory abnormalities are classified as they present themselves at the patient's bedside. This book is aimed at general practitioners and pediatricians, in particular those who are not exposed to pediatric endocrine problems on a daily basis, and at trainees in endocrinology and pediatric endocrinology as they acquire familiarity with clinical problem solving to make rational choices when facing clinical dilemmas.

Robin Wolaner Answers The Significant Seven

Robin Wolaner began her career as a copywriter at Penthouse, worked at Mother Jones and Runner's World, founded Parenting magazine, and launched Vibe and Martha Stewart Living. In Wolaner's new book, Naked in the Boardroom, she shares tales about making a successful go of it all. See the answers Wolaner gave for the Amazon.com Significant Seven questions that we like to run by every author.

Wolaner answers the Amazon.com Significant Seven questions

From Publishers Weekly
Wolaner rose from office temp to become president and CEO of Sunset Publishing before moving on to write, consult and serve on private corporate and nonprofit boards. Her own stories, and anecdotes from other achievers, are the basis for this chatty instruction manual for the distaff up-and-coming, which begins with the predictable assertion that women are generally different from men. The following chapters exhort readers to burn their career plans, listen to their guts, learn by example, benefit from smart moves, recover from bad ones, hire and fire well and manipulate situations to their advantage. Eighty-one "Naked Truths" punctuate her upbeat tale of mostly serendipitous and intuition-driven maneuvers. These aphorisms range from the obvious ("Return phone calls and emails") to the dubious ("If you undo a bad decision quickly, it doesn't count"). Sidebars labeled "Stripped-Down Wisdom" address corporate basics like how to dress, how to fire and how to cope as a working mother. In "Baring It," successful women recount their biggest mistakes and the lessons learned. Despite the book's intrusive theme of nudity, Wolaner gives some genuinely helpful advice, but often overplays the roles of ambition, networking and gut instinct at the expense of expertise, competence and plain hard work. A Business Book of Uncommon Candor and Heart
By Pete D
This is not just one great book, it's actually a couple great books - a business advice title of uncommon candor, a jaunty personal memoir, and an eye-opening account of life as a powerful woman and mother in corporate America. In the interest of full disclosure, Robin was one of my mentors - and this book manages to distill her cool wit, cut-to-the-chase honesty, and keen judgement into one galloping read. If you're a woman in corporate America, read this book - and if you're a man in corporate America, really read this book - Robin's rare combination of fearless leadership, humility and open heart are a model for look-yourself-in-the-mirror career success.

Real insight into management
By Stewart Alsop
Robin Wolaner speaks the truth about how to be an effective manager, including the fundamental concept that being human and emotional has a place in the office. I might be a guy, but I think it's one of the most useful business books I've read.

Very detailed
By mjkt
"Mormonism 101" by Bill MckEever and Eric Johnson is a book about helping you to understand Mormonism. This is not a pro-Mormon book it is a very honest look into Mormonism that holds nothing back. I really appreciated that it compared true Christianity to Mormonism which is its own religion and not Christian. It used Mormon's own doctrine and compared it to scripture like we are supposed to. I was very impressed on the detail the authors went thru for us readers to really understand the Mormons. I highly recommend this book.

I was given this book from BakerBooks for my honest review.

Finding the Dragon Lady: The Mystery of Vietnam's Madame Nhu, by Monique Brinson Demery

In November 1963, the president of South Vietnam and his brother were brutally executed in a coup that was sanctioned and supported by the American government. President Kennedy later explained to his close friend Paul “Red” Fay that the reason the United States made the fateful decision to get rid of the Ngos was in no small part because of South Vietnam’s first lady, Madame Nhu. “That goddamn bitch,” Fay remembers President Kennedy saying, “She’s responsible ... that bitch stuck her nose in and boiled up the whole situation down there.”

The coup marked the collapse of the Diem government and became the US entry point for a decade-long conflict in Vietnam. Kennedy’s death and the atrocities of the ensuing war eclipsed the memory of Madame Nhu—with her daunting mixture of fierceness and beauty. But at the time, to David Halberstam, she was “the beautiful but diabolic sex dictatress,” and Malcolm Browne called her “the most dangerous enemy a man can have.”

By 1987, the once-glamorous celebrity had retreated into exile and seclusion, and remained there until young American Monique Demery tracked her down in Paris thirty years later. Finding the Dragon Lady is Demery’s story of her improbable relationship with Madame Nhu, and—having ultimately been entrusted with Madame Nhu’s unpublished memoirs and her diary from the years leading up to the coup—the first full history of the Dragon Lady herself, a woman who was feared and fantasized over in her time, and who singlehandedly frustrated the government of one of the world’s superpowers.

She was an enigma, extremely powerful in her heyday but almost forgotten since then: Madame Nhu, wife to the brother of the president of South Vietnam and in practical terms the first lady, a woman small of stature but hugely influential, whose participation in events preceding the 1963 coup that saw her own husband and brother-in-law executed contributed directly to the escalation of the war in Vietnam and to the radical alteration of the American and Vietnamese political and social landscapes. Based on Madame Nhu’s unpublished memoirs and on personal interviews with the woman known as the Dragon Lady, the book restores Madame Nhu to her proper place in history, as a ruthless and brilliant woman without whose manipulations the war in Vietnam might have turned out very differently. Madame Nhu, who died in 2011, spent more than 40 years (roughly the second half of her life) living far out of the public eye; this frequently surprising book brings its subject back from exile. --David Pitt

Review
Chicago Tribune’s Printers Row Journal
“A fascinating portrait of this polarizing figure …[a] fair-minded and readable look at Madame Nhu and her prominent role in the early years of the Vietnam War…This book performs an especially valuable service to readers who want to understand why the U.S. sometimes stumbles in foreign affairs….The book benefits from a firm understanding of Vietnamese traditions. …In the end, Demery admits that she ultimately became Madame Nhu's "friend," an admission that makes the reader admire the biographer even more for being so clear-eyed about her subject's flaws.”

San Francisco Chronicle
“Demery succeeds in painting such a nuanced picture of this powerful woman that by the time we reach Madame Nhu's 1963 U.S. press tour, we can sympathize with her desire to defend her country… ‘Finding the Dragon Lady’ is a brave book. Demery realized that ‘I had been handed the chance to breathe some life into the remote, exotic place in history to which she had been assigned,’ and she took that opportunity to push beyond the conventional understanding of this painful and polarizing era. It's a testament to her deep knowledge of Vietnamese and American culture that she leaves us wondering what might have been.”

Kirkus Reviews
“Engagingly provocative…Smart and well-researched, Demery’s biography offers insight into both an intriguing figure and the complicated historical moment with which she became eternally identified. A welcome addition to the literature on Vietnam.”

Daily Beast
“Deeply intriguing...one hell of a story.”

Alexia Nader, Kirkus Reviews
“Finding the Dragon Lady stands out from most biographies of political leaders: It emphasizes, rather than conceals, the competing narratives of an unreliable and manipulative subject…It was ultimately Demery’s candid way of writing and structuring her biography that won her the battle with her subject. Her book reveals the many masks Madame Nhu wore to guard herself against the public (and even the author), and gives stark glimpses of the woman underneath.”

Publishers Weekly
“Illuminating… shed[s] light on one of the country’s most controversial figures.”

Elizabeth Becker, author of When the War Was Over: Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge
“Even those familiar with the history of Vietnam will be astonished at the bizarre case of Madame Nhu. Monique Demery tracks down the original Vietnamese 'Dragon Lady' who confesses to weaknesses and heartbreak but refuses to take responsibility for her role in the war that ruined so many lives in her country and ours.”

Robert K. Brigham, Shirley Ecker Boskey Professor of History and International Relations at Vassar College
“Finding the Dragon Ladyis a truly monumental achievement. Demery has vividly captured the life and times of one of Vietnam’s most intriguing figures. Beautifully told, and exhaustively researched in French, Vietnamese, and American sources—including interviews with Madame Nhu—Demery’s book is now the standard for understanding the cultural politics of South Vietnam’s first family.”

Craig R. Whitney, Vietnam War correspondent and author of Living with Guns
“In the early days of America’s engagement in Vietnam, no one played a greater role than Madame Nhu in shaping the Saigon regime’s anti-Communist fervor. But who was the Dragon Lady, really? This superb portrait reveals her self-doubts, conveys the fierce persona she developed to overcome them, and explains how her zealotry doomed the regime and condemned her to a life in exile.”

David Lamb, author, Vietnam, Now: A Reporter Returns
“Here is the last untold story of the Vietnam war, the riveting, intimate and ultimately tragic profile of Madame Ngo Dinh Nhu, South Vietnam’s unofficial First Lady whose political power and ruthlessness earned her the nickname The Dragon Lady. In her life, which ended in exile and isolation in 2011, are the seeds of America’s ill-fated military involvement in Vietnam. Monique Demery spent ten years tracking down the elusive Dragon Lady. Her diligence has produced a laudatory book that is at once scholarly and as readable as a good mystery.”

Morley Safer, correspondent for 60 Minutes, CBS News
“It was said of Lord Byron that he was “mad, bad and dangerous to know.” Not a bad appellation or epitaph for Tran Le Xuan, the infamous Madam Nhu. Monique Brinson Demery has deftly captured the life and time of the woman who defied her own government, the communist forces of North Vietnam and the Americans.”

Philip Caputo, author of A Rumor of War and the forthcoming The Longest Road
“Monique Demery's account of her search for one of the pivotal figures in the Vietnam War, the beautiful and dangerous Madame Nhu, is a riveting detective story and a fascniating portrait of a woman far more complicated than her media image as The Dragon Lady.”

The woman behind the South Vietnamese seat of power during the Diệm era
By Cheryl M-M
Women in politics. They are often reduced to the clothes they are wearing and the hairstyle they rock. In a predominantly male driven aspect of society the female is usually merely the wife of, daughter of or mistress of a man in power. Not enough women take center stage in government and when they do they are scrutinized and criticized far harsher than their male counterparts.
Madame Nhu was only the sister in law of the man in charge and yet she and her family exerted the strongest influence on him and the country. She was known for her lack of diplomacy. She refused to stay quiet and called a duck a duck if indeed it quacked and walked like said duck. She put many policies into place that took women back 20 steps into the last century.
Her so called morality laws outlawed abortion, divorce, adultery, contraceptives, dance halls, beauty pageants and she was often called out for being a hypocrite.
Madame Nhu was adamant and very vocal about the fact that the Americans brought about the downfall of her family and in doing so also the country.
"My family has been treacherously killed with either official or unofficial blessing of the American government, I can predict to you now that the story is only at its beginning."
Of course that statement, which implies better the devil you know than the devil you don't, was to be eerily predictive. The US thought they could control the outcome in North Vietnam via South Vietnam by removing Diệm. Instead the removal of Diệm and Nhu was the start of even greater instability in South Vietnam.
Demery makes an interesting point about the influence certain foreign press members had in South Vietnam. Openly critical of Madame Nhu and the country ruled by her family members they were actually undermining the US and strengthening the North Vietnamese. Pulling the rug right out from under them in the name of the press.
When the Buddhists starting protesting and the pagoda raids followed Madame Nhu was convinced that the Buddhist protest was backed and planned by the communists and manipulated by the Americans. Many years later a man who worked for many Us newspapers in Vietnam during the Diệm era was revealed as a North Vietnamese collaborator when he defected to NV.
Often seen as the loud mouthed, bossy Iron Lady of SV, the power behind the throne so to speak Madame Nhu was right on the button when it come to evaluating the political situation in her country. She was right about something so pivotal that if someone had listened they might have understood.
If you do not come from that country and culture then it is nigh on impossible to understand the complexity of past history, traditional values and the mindset of man in that foreign country, especially when it is the complete opposite of Western culture.
Unfortunately that is a mistake still made nearly half a century later.
Demery set out to find and understand the elusive Madame Nhu but I think in the end she remained the misunderstood and often misrepresented enigma that she has been for many decades. Other than the research already presented and written about by others Demery wasn't able to get Madame Nhu to let her guard down. She died with her inner Pandora's Box intact.
The woman was as sharp as knife there is a reason she kept that box closed very tightly.
I really enjoyed the way the author approached the subject. It was written in a very personal and lighthearted way with factual clarity. Demery is concise without being boring and praises her sources for the groundwork they have already done on the subject in hand. Kudos to the author for both the intricate research and for giving others their due when necessary.
An immensely interesting read.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley.

Original research on the Vietnam era
By Chris
I had thought everything that could be written on the Vietnam War had been written. The existence of this book proves me wrong. While it is not a landmark work like Karnow's Vietnam or Halberstam's The Best and the Brightest, it is nonetheless original, interesting, and worth reading for those interested in Vietnam.
I was curious if this book would get me to sympathize with Madame Nhu. The answer is not really. As a girl and a middle child at that, Madame Nhu did not receive the best child care, despite being born into an upper class family. Her parents dumped her on the grandparents, the grandparents pawned her off on the servants, and the servants dumped little Madame Nhu on the gardeners who were convicts forced to do yard work on the family estate. It's worth pausing and imagining leaving your children with people forced to do community service projects on the highway. When she was a toddler, she nearly died from an infection that was a direct result of neglect. So Madame Nhu had a rough childhood. But most people with bad formative years don't encourage monks to self-immolate themselves or watch happily while those same monks clubbed in the head by soldiers.
Madame Nhu married well (by well I mean prestige and connections; personally her husband was cold towards her and fooled around). Her husband began as a librarian, but went on to found the Personalist Labor Party. This party would be the base of support for his brother Diem, who would go on to become Prime Minister and later President. Among her husbands other siblings was the first Vietnamese Archbishop and a provincial chief.
The author's thesis is that Madame Nhu, the Dragon Lady, was more than a beautiful and cruel cartoon character. Demery lays out important instances where she helped prop up the regime. Early on she organizes protests against a pro-French general threatening Diem's power. Later on she advises her husband and Diem on how to deal with rebellious paratroopers. While it may be that Madame Nhu had a sharper political mind than she's been given credit for, this does not charge the fact that she caused more harm than good. She was the one who introduced the enormously unpopular morality laws banning contraception, prostitution, and divorce. Most importantly, Madame Nhu is the one who made the infamous remark, "If the Buddhists wish to have another barbecue, I will be glad to supply the gasoline and the match." The public relations disaster that was Madame Nhu was one of the deciding factors that convinced the Kennedy administration to approve and encourage a coup against Diem.
I'm glad the author took the time to seek Madame Nhu out (after the coup she almost never granted interviews and her exact location was unknown). Through patience Demery not only interviewed Nhu, but obtained her unpublished memoirs and a volume of her diary. Madame Nhu was a pivotal figure in the Second Indochina war, although I think the author exaggerates her importance a bit. My main criticism of the book has to do with the fashion commentary. Frequently the author reports on what Madame Nhu is wearing. If Madame Nhu was important, these details trivialize her in my opinion. If I'm reading a book on Mao, I don't expect or want to know what he wore to a meeting with Khrushchev ("Chairman Mao, who are you wearing to the party congress?").
This is a fresh, original work that I would recommend to those interested in the Vietnam War. Hopefully, the author will write more on the region in the future.

Finding the Dragon Lady - Madame Nhu
By Amy K.
After having just returned from a trip to Vietnam I was completely interested in learning more about this country. Monique Demery gave me just what I needed. It was a captivating book that helped me understand the Vietnam War better (I was a born during it's infancy) and helped me understand all that Vietnam had been through during the last 100+ years. Even though I had many guides on our stay throughout Vietnam, not one had mentioned the Diem Regime, the Nhu's and especially Madame Nhu. I now can see how uninformed I was about the history over there. My father is a professor who teaches in many cities in Vietnam and he found this book incredibly fascinating as well. It is really, really well written and a page turner -I could not put it down! I would love to see more work by M. Demery.

What's up with Radclyffe?
By Amazon Customer
I've read most, if not all of Radclyffe's books. This one just doesn't live up to her high standards, by a long shot. The characters aren't fleshed out--you can't connect emotionally with either of them. And, while it's cool that she wove in characters from the Cam/Blair series, there was too much of their personal life and not enough of the two main characters--Wes and Evyn. It's like she didn't have enough of a story to focus on them entirely. So, a lot of what could have been written about their relationship to develop it, to make it more full, to make the reader understand who they each were and why they'd be attracted to each other (like deeper character histories, etc.) didn't get included.

As a result, I found myself putting the book aside and forcing myself to finish it because I bought it. I kept hoping that it would get better. And I agree with the other writer. Where have Radclyffe's steamy sex scenes gone. This book was just so-so for that. If the story had been better, it wouldn't have mattered as much, but we need something.

The plot was also very predictable with none of the usual Radclyffe turns like, "Whoa! I didn't see that coming!" Her last First Responders novel was kind of like that, but not as bad. This just didn't have any oomph to it at all. Hate to say it, but it bordered on boring, and that's not Radclyffe at all. Think back to Passion's Bright Fury, Fated Love, or Turn Back Time, and you'll know what I mean. This doesn't measure up. Sorry to say that, because I'm a HUGE Radclyffe fan.

Bluntly, this book felt like it was just "phoned in" and written to satisfy a commitment of some sort, which is ironic since Radclyffe is the publisher. Just wasn't up to her usual standards. I guess that's what happens when you're so prolific. Maybe we shouldn't expect that same magic every time, but it's just disappointing when it's not there.

same old song and dance
By M. A. Dzienisiuk
sorry to say... but not a good read. I'm on 209 page (my last likely) and cant stomach anymore. Radclyffe 'is' very good writer, but how many books can be about the same old song and dance and dont forget that you have to read all previous books to even know who is who and what the hell is going on.
If i read one more "she is soo glorius, but we cant and we have to keep it professional" i'm gonna scream.
There is too many good books on 'the lesbian' shelf right now to make this one a priority

Not So Hot This Time Around
By L. Proud
I'm a loyal, true blue Rad fan, and I know she wouldn't want me to lie. This book is by far her weakest offering. I found myself scratching my head, wondering who's trying to play a joke on me--this reads like a neophyte trying to do Radclyffe. I will be ever so sorry if this signals the end of the Radclyffe era--I'm going to reserve further comments until I read her next book. Its quality will tell the tale, but this one is best left on the shelf.

Brilliant beginning, but...
By Brian C.
This review will divide itself roughly into two sections. In the first section I will attempt to provide a brief summary of Nishida's philosophy as presented in this book which, due to limitations of space, will remain profoundly inadequate. In the second section I will attempt to make a case for also reading Nishida's later works in addition to this work. An Inquiry into the Good is Nishida's first book, and it is also his most popular book. While it is certainly profound in it's own right, and deserves close attention, Nishida's thought underwent a tremendous development throughout his life. So I thoroughly recommend that anyone who reads this book also attempt to get their hands on some of Nishida's later works (especially Intelligibility and the Philosophy of Nothingness: Three Philosophical Essays and Last Writings: Nothingness and the Religious Worldview).

I.

Nishida's ultimate concern in this work, as his title suggests, is with the question of the nature of the good which can be considered an ethical question in the broad sense. This fact is often overlooked because Nishida considers questions about value to be intimately connected with questions about the nature of reality, or what we ordinarily call metaphysical questions. In fact one of the great motivating sources for Nishida's philosophy as a whole is Nishida's attempt to overcome what has become known in the West as the fact/value dichotomy. So in order to address the nature of the good Nishida first has to address questions about the nature of reality. An Inquiry into the Good is not, therefore, a book merely about ethics in the restricted sense of that term. Over half of the book is devoted to attempting to answer metaphysical questions about the nature of reality and so Nishida's primary interest in the nature of the good is often overlooked.

Nishida's approach to metaphysics, however, is unique. Nishida was personally influenced profoundly by zen. Zen is often suspicious of abstract, rational conceptions of reality and instead favors a method of "direct seeing" in approaching reality. This is in direct contrast to the Western method of approach to questions about the nature of reality which rely primarily on logic and rational argument in attempting to determine or uncover the nature of reality. Nishitani Keiji summarizes these different approaches well in his book on Nishida. Nishitani writes, "The sense of quest...as it appears in Plato's dialogues entails a spirit of inquiry aimed at the gradual discovery through dialogue of something new, something not yet known to the participants. This spirit appears as the standpoint of pure reason that seeks to uncover something new and completely unknown, to discover according to the laws of logic." The Western method usually begins with premises accepted as self-evident, or with facts known directly through sense experience, and through the use of reason and discussion attempts to deduce other unknown, or not immediately self-evident truths through the methods of valid reasoning as determined by logic. In other words, the Western method attempts to transcend "phenomenal" reality, or what can be immediately known, and to uncover "noumenal" reality, which cannot be directly or immediately known, through the use of reason and logic. This is, broadly speaking, the method of the empirical sciences.

Nishida, on the other hand, argues that thinking (itself a part of the phenomenal world) does not possess any inherent ability to transcend the phenomenal world and reveal noumenal reality as it is "in itself". Nishida, therefore, adopts a different method in approaching metaphysical questions. We turn again to Nishitani who writes, "In order to grasp something in it's actual form, we must distance ourselves from the discriminating, relativizing self...The standpoint of the conscious self consists in setting up an opposition between the self and things so that we have a self on the one hand and things existing apart from the self on the other." In order to grasp reality as it is we must overcome the standpoint of the conscious self and adopt the standpoint of the non-ego which, as Nishitani writes, "smashes that pattern we call self to become one with the Life of the universe, of nature. When one stands there, all things, just as they are, become the actual form and actual reality that they are...This is very different from materialism, which is not a standpoint that thinks things by becoming them." There is no doubt that this method will have an idealistic sound to most Western readers (more on this later). But correctly understood Nishida's views cannot be reduced to either idealism or realism as these are commonly understood.

So what conclusions does Nishida reach in regard to the nature of reality by following this method? Briefly stated Nishida arrives at a vision of reality as "an independent, self-sufficient, pure activity" which is held together by what Nishida calls (in this translation) "a certain unifying reality" at the base of experience. Nishida, therefore, opposes a vision of reality conceived as a relation between passive "things" interacting with eachother, and whose motion is imparted from some outside source. Reality for Nishida is always active and self-developing.

What implications does this have in the realm of ethics? Again, to state things as briefly as possible "If we regard this unifying power [the certain unifying reality] as the personality of each individual, then the good resides in the maintenance and development of personality as this unifying power." To conceive of the good as the "maintenance and development of personality" may at first appear to be a very self-centered ethics. But this would be to misunderstand Nishida entirely. It would take me too long, and too far afield, to explain fully why this is a misunderstanding but to put it simply, Nishida argues that it is only by giving up our usual "self-centeredness", which places the ground of our activity in the conscious self already isolated from an objective world of things and other people, that we are able to unify our activity with the ground of our true personality, or the unifying power at the base of reality, which Nishida also calls God. Nishida sees the ultimate good for the human being in a surrendering to God, or in a becoming one with the activity of the universe.

This is a very simplistic overview of Nishida's theory of the Good and does not come close to doing it justice. But even in this simple form it has drastic implications in perhaps unexpected ways. I have recently, for instance, been pondering the implications of Nishida's theory of the good for the field of economics. It seems to me that Nishida's theory provides a powerful alternative to more hedonistic theories of human motivation and economics based on the principles of marginal utility and has the potential to reconcile the liberal ideals of individual liberty with what is usually referred to as the welfare state. This could have interesting implications for our current political situation in the United States. This is an area in which one might not at first excpect Nishida's thought to have much to say, but I think it does.

II.

Nishida himself summarizes the shortcomings of his first book in his preface, "As I look at it now, the standpoint of this book is that of consciousness, which might be thought of as a kind of psychologism. Yet even if people criticize it as being too psychological, there is little I can do now. I do think, however, that what lay deep in my thought when I wrote it was not something that is merely psychological." Psychologism is a doctrine that attempts to ground the laws of logic in empirical psychology. Carried to an extreme this view tends towards various forms of relativism since it attempts to base logical laws, which are supposed to be ideal laws valid for all time, on empirical facts. Nishida attempts to overcome any psychologistic tendencies in his early thought in his later work by developing his notion of logical spaces, or basho.

I cannot summarize Nishida's later books here but, in my opinion, another short-coming of Nishida's choice to begin from "the standpoint of consciousness" is that it opens his thought to being misinterpreted in an idealist fashion. It is almost impossible for any Western reader to interpret Nishida's statement that true reality consists in phenomena of consciousness in anything but an idealist way. Since idealism as a metaphysical system is largely out of favor this might make Nishida's metaphysics seem quaint and irrelevant. Nothing could be further from the truth in my opinion. Nishida develops (along with Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty) one of the most profound critiques by any philosopher of the subject-object dichotomy and the metaphysics that are based on this dichotomy. But this is clearer in Nishida's later works. In Nishida's later works it is clear that the opposition between subject and object is not overcome by collapsing or absorbing the object into the subject (which is idealism). This book still lends itself to misinterpretation in that regard.

So while I highly suggest that anyone with an interest in philosophy buy this book and read it carefully, I also highly suggest that anyone interested in Nishida do all that they can to get their hands on Nishida's later works.

And as one final note. Many reviewers have argued that it would be helpful to have an understanding of zen when approaching this work. It would definitely be helpful to know something of zen when reading Nishida, and zen is certainly worth studying in it's own right, but in my opinion an understanding of Kant, and especially his notion of the transcendental unity of apperception, is more important when approaching this work than an understanding of zen. I think someone with a decent understanding of Kant will have an easier time unraveling this work than someone who limits themselves to studying zen.

Good deal
By Fred Evans
just got another copy of Nishida's first work. Every time somebody sees me reading this book, for years now, they borrow it and I never see the book again. Got this one used, good shape, good shipping, not too much writing in it, I am happy. Gonna stay home with this copy until I finish it again! This book is NOT about Zen at all. If you are new to Buddhism get this for later use. You will use it! Its mostly a compilation of the thoughts of Satoru.

A tedious read, with some real gems within.
By Anton Sevilla
Nishida's book was a bit tedious. The translation seems good and his writing style isn't deliberately cryptic. Familiarity in Eastern thought, particularly Zen Buddhist thought, greatly aids making sense of what he says. Also a familiarity with Kant and Hegel (whom he responds to) and the Western tradition would be greatly helpful.

Aside from his key point on reckoning with things in their immediacy (paraphrase), I found quite a gem in his description of God in his later chapters -- a view of God even atheistic materialists might agree with.

All in all a good book, lacking in style but not in substance.

Constellations: A Play, by Nick Payne

"A singular astonishment." ―John Lahr, The New Yorker

One relationship. Infinite possibilities.
In the beginning Marianne and Roland meet at a party. They go for a drink, or perhaps they don't. They fall madly in love and start dating, but eventually they break up. After a chance encounter in a supermarket they get back together, or maybe they run into each other and Marianne reveals that she's now engaged to someone else and that's that. Or perhaps Roland is engaged. Maybe they get married, or maybe their time together will be tragically short.
Nick Payne's Constellations is a play about free will and friendship; it's also about quantum multiverse theory, love, and honey.

Review

“Who knew that higher physics could be so sexy, so accessible--and so emotionally devastating? Constellations, Nick Payne's gorgeous two-character drama, starring a perfectly matched Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson, may be the most sophisticated date play Broadway has seen.” ―Ben Brantley, The New York Times

“The play may fixate on physics, but the chemistry between the two leads is potent enough to move an audience to tears.” ―Alexis Soloski, The Guardian

“The pleasure of the evening lies in the way it is both eminently sensible and completely nonsensical. Details accumulate sufficiently to explain character and plot, while throwing us so off-guard as to make questions of narrative moot . . . Wilson and Gyllenhaal are tasked with showing us how the slightest shift in emphasis can alter a line's meaning. Wilson has the more commanding stage technique while the approach of Gyllenhaal is more halting and affectionate. Their chemistry is palpable.” ―Brendan Lemon, Financial Times

“Short and sweet and strangely haunting . . . Although barely an hour long, this baby bombshell by hot Brit scribe Nick Payne overflows with emotional highs and lows . . . By the end of the play (has it really been only an hour?), we're fully invested in [the characters'] lives. All of them.” ―Marilyn Stasio, Variety

“Rarely has quantum physics felt as romantic, as lively as it does in Broadway's Constellations.” ―Elisabeth Vincentelli, New York Post

“British playwright Nick Payne's beguiling Constellations is not only a full-bodied narrative, it's a richly affecting experience. That's thanks to the sensitivity of the writing, but also to the warmth, humor and vitality invested in it by Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson, giving two astonishing performances in a production from Michael Longhurst that's as rigorous as it is tender.” ―David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

“We've been down similar roads before in pop culture, with Groundhog Day being the classic version. But Payne puts his own stamp on the idea -- and director Michael Longhurst's staging touches both the head and the heart deeply. Even Tom Scutt's lovely set, a bare stage below and beside a huge collection of inflated white balloons, packs a poetic touch. And the cast is swoon-worthy. Gyllenhaal is laid-back and ever-genuine as the passive Roland. Wilson, a two-time Olivier Award winner, is sensual and irresistibly carefree -- a perfect foil. Together, they have something elusive: combustible chemistry. Heavenly sparks ensue.” ―Joe Dziemianowicz, New York Daily News

“Constellations is smart but not dry; its focus is on the personal and emotional, and Gyllenhaal and Wilson reboot themselves convincingly at every stutter and turn. They're wonderfully multiversatile.” ―Adam Feldman, Time Out New York

“Despite abrupt scene and mood fluctuations, Gyllenhaal and Wilson perform the tricky repetitions and time shifts with breathtaking smoothness. Wilson expressively signals Marianne's emotions, whether glee or mischief or heartbreaking vulnerability. Gyllenhaal's performance is more opaque, yet he infuses Roland with decency and an earnest desire to communicate with the better-educated, more emotional Marianne.” ―Jennifer Farrar, Associated Press

“Intimate and cosmic concerns are woven together with such grace that they seem inextricable.” ―Elysa Gardner, USA Today

“The actors give true tour-de-force performances ... Wilson, a two-time Olivier award-winner honored on Sunday as best actress in a TV series, duels and parries with her partner to memorable effect, whether she's a sloppily emotional figure out on a first date, or an academic methodically enchanted by the mysteries of the universe.” ―Robert Kahn, NBC

“[Nick Payne is] one of the most dazzlingly gifted dramatists of a new generation--sharp, funny, wise, humane.” ―Vogue

“The nearest I've come across in ages to a play that feels heaven-sent.” ―Matt Wolf, The New York Times

“Constellations gets into your head and under your skin with an immediacy that sometimes tickles and often hurts.” ―Ben Brantley, The New York Times

“Spry, funny and ultimately very moving . . . A touchingly original study of a relationship and a meditation on that all too familiar refrain: ‘if only.'” ―Sarah Hemming, Financial Times

“Wondrously supple . . . The trick the playwright pulls off is to bring a feather-light touch to weighty themes.” ―Maxie Szalwinska, The Sunday Times

“Beautiful and brilliant . . . Seldom has a play felt so exhilarating.” ―Georgina Brown, Mail on Sunday

“The phrase ‘emotionally satisfying' is rarely seen alongside that of ‘experimental drama'--which makes Nick Payne's arresting, intelligent new play Constellations all the more exciting.” ―David Benedict, Variety

“I do know the real thing when I see it. And Nick Payne, a playwright previously unknown to me, is at the beginning of a great career.” ―John Lahr, The New Yorker

“Payne is undoubtedly one of the brightest sparks in our playwriting landscape.” ―Fiona Mountford, London Evening Standard

“I know it's only January, but if I see a more ingenious, touching and intellectually searching play than Constellations this year, I will count myself very lucky.” ―Charles Spencer, The Daily Telegraph

“Not since Mike Bartlett's Cock, so to speak, have I been so exhilarated by a new play . . . Extraordinary.” ―Paul Taylor, The Independent

Where do we go from here?
By MantaGalaxy
This play truly was something special. If you've ever read or seen "Sure Thing" by David Ives, this runs right down a similar path. However, this is a full-length play... at least it's longer than "Sure Thing." It is grounded in reality which allows each individual scenario to be believable in its own right.

I laughed out loud and I felt my heartstrings being plucked by cruel realities and unfortunate timing.

*MINOR SPOILER**

While this is a celebration of the idea of alternate realities, it deals with the idea that we as humans actually do not have any control over the big picture. Everything will always fall as it always was going to fall. The constellations in the sky are always the same. You can't change the destination, so why not change the journey? Decide what you can, and let fate decide the rest.

Soon to be in every Theatre in America
By Patrick Cronin
Saw this a few weeks ago with Jake Gyllenhall and Ruth Wilson and just loved it! It is David Ives' All in the Timing with a British accent. It is funny; it is sad; it is imaginative. It is all of the things most new plays aren't. As with Logan's Red this play will be done all over America and at 70 minutes long with only two actors it is going to be a young actors' dream roll. Buy it and enjoy the wonderful twists of language. You will not be disappointed.

Better on stage than on paper
By JW
A key element of this play is that some lines are repeated in different circumstances, with different tones and emphases--thus, would read this script only if you're an actor, otherwise would recommend watching it live.
