Excellent book

I have owned a copy of this book since the early 70's. It has served me VERY well over the years. In a nutshell, it provides you with the tools necessary to identify and deal with with 'crooked thinking' whether innocent or deliberative. There are many people who use techniques to persuade others that are downright dishonest. This book helps balance the the match. I can honestly say that this book has helped me untangle many a thorny problem.

I was delighted to find a copy for the kindle or for e-readers and snatched it up immediately. This book is very well written and I re-read it periodically to sharpen my claws. While the book could be used for underhanded purposes, I have found that I don't need to resort to underhanded techniques to win my case...but I do need to understand the techniques when used against me.

Invaluable

In my biased opinion, this ranks as one of the finest books on the subject of critical thinking. Unfortunately, it is highly priced on Amazon.com, but one can find cheaper alternatives on the internet. Thouless focuses a lot on how social proof, and other biases do impede one's ability to think rationally, especially when facts are not conclusive, or when there are more than two plausible arguments in a given scenario. Good for policy makers, students, regular folks, and people who routinely make decisions under uncertainty.

The copy I received doesn't have this cover, it has the cover of the kindle edition which is an updated edition by R.H. Thouless grandson C.R. Thouless???...So basically this a different book, atleast that's what I take away from the last paragraph of the preface-" No doubt my personal political views, together with those of my grandfather, are apparent from selection of examples, and I am no more impartial or immune to crooked thinking than any of my readers. I must apologize, but if a book such as this is to deal with controversial topics it is not possible to avoid some personal bias. In selecting topics for discussion I have necessarily chosen those which have struck me. It is always easier to find examples of crooked thinking in the words of one's opponents than in those on one's friends. ((( The selection of material has necessarily been affected{GROSSLY] by differences between my interests and those of my grandfather=[HE SHOULD HAVE COPIED HIS GRANDFATHERS WORK AND LEFT HIS OPINION FOR ANOTHER BOOK OR SUBJECT]... I cannot claim to APPROACH MY GRANDFATHERS KNOWLEDGE OR UNDERSTANDING{ NO KIDDING???] In religious matters and for this reason they have received less emphasis than earlier editions.My professional training is in ecology and animal behavior, and most of my adult life has been spent working on wildlife conservation in Africa...((( It's too late to return this drivel, but, I can use it to stabilize a chair...The title should be changed to "How I destroyed my grandfathers masterpiece"...

She lives in Yorkshire, England, with her husband and two children and works at the Leeds University History of Science Museum.

Set Your Course by a Different Guide, Anyone But This One

This book is useless as a guide to the night sky chiefly because it’s illustrated with reproductions from John Beavis’s 18th century star atlas. These ornate, fanciful engravings might look impressive but they are virtually useless to anyone trying to find a constellation in the sky. Much of the book is devoted to a discussion of deep-sky objects such as black holes, quasars, and Messier objects which aren’t visible to the naked eye. The constellations are described as more of an afterthought in favor of abbreviated biographies of famous astronomers, unimaginably retold snippets of mythology, and shallow discussion of the major advances of twentieth century astronomy. The author often refers to stars and constellations leaving the poor reader wondering how to find them. Readers wishing to learn the night sky, or to teach the night sky to children, should begin with H.A. Rey’s "The Stars: A New Way to See Them" a classic that has never been surpassed, providing superlative, friendly star charts and a visual introduction to the basic of the movement of the heavens.

Ignore Sir Square's review. The book is a casual and poetic beauty and a gorgeous glance at the sky and all its history and lore. It is endearing and definitely worth the price. Fan of the stars? Buy it.

Badly written, edited and printed. Buy H.A.Rey instead

This book is poorly written, badly edited and printed on cheap paper so that the illustrations, which should form the heart of the book are all but illegible.I was attracted to this book because it claims to deal with the South sky as well as the Northern constellations. However, in the entire book, there is not so much as a single mention of latitude and how it might affect your view of the stars. Nor does the author tell you where, in either the Northern Hemisphere or Southern hemisphere she is using as her location for star gazing. It does matter.This is typical of the careless writing and equally careless editing that run through this book. It is organized by months and illustrated by cuts from John Bevis' star atlas published in the 1700s. Although Bevis atlas was a famous work of art, it was printed full folio size, or about the size of a tabloid newspaper.For this book, the illustrations have been shrunk to half a page of a trade size paperback.On the cheap paper that composes this book, they come close to dissolving into patterns of white and black dots.In the middle of the book are contemporary star charts that we are supposed to refer back to from various months and the Bevis star atlas. Frequently the author will discuss a star in a given month, and it is impossible to find it on the appropriate seasonal star chart. It is as though no one ever proof read this book at all, or tried to use it. Perhaps the most irritating facet of all is that Mrs. Winterburn does not seem able to make up her mind who the audience is she is addressing: children, adults or agrieved women scientists who believe they have been passed over in favor of male colleagues. I've rarely felt quite so disappointed by a book on a practical subject.This is one I wish came with a money back offer. Don't make the mistake I did. Don't buy this book.

Their experience raising chickens was chronicled in Chick Days. Morrison�works as the Creative Director at Storey Publishing and serves as president of the Northern Berkshire Beekeepers Association.

Photographer Mars Vilaubi chronicled the adventures of his three backyard hens from their first days out of the egg through their first days laying eggs in Chick Days. He lives in western Massachusetts.

Best Beekeeping Book for Beginners

This is the book I wish existed when I started beekeeping in 2008. Loaded with photos and step-by-step instructions, it's one of the few books that will help you survive your first year, especially if you don't have a mentor. As the co-chair of the Albuquerque beekeepers group (400 strong) for the past 3 years, here's why I think beginner beeks will be especially well-supported by the approach in this book.

PROS:

- STEP-BY-STEP instructions are included for a variety of beginner tasks like installing a package, lighting a smoker, and conducting your first hive check. Seasoned beekeepers often forget how scary these first steps can be.

- PHOTOS, PHOTOS, PHOTOS! Everything from eggs and larvae to wax festooning to varroa mites to Nasonov fanning gets a gorgeous photo. I can't emphasize enough the importance of visual learning when it comes to beekeeping.

- A PERSONAL STORYLINE. This book follows the author's experience keeping backyard bees with her family. The good the bad and the ugly details are all included, making for a very forgiving and human narrative.

- INTERVIEWS WITH LOCAL BEEKS. Backyard beekeepers from San Francisco to Austin to Chicago are highlighted throughout the book. (I'm on page 47.) The sheer variety of beekeepers presented makes a new beek feel comfortable developing their own unique approach.

- A NATURAL APPROACH. Most books I used in my first year were very chemical-centric and solely devoted to Langstroth hives. This book primarily covers Langstroth hives but also discusses top bar hives and pays more than just lip-service to a chemical-free approach.

- Once you have a full year of beekeeping under your belt, you'll want to move on to more substantial reference books like "The Beekeeper's Handbook" or "The Practical Beekeeper."

THIS BOOK HAS IT ALL!!!!!!!!!

Let me pre-face my review by saying I don't normally write reviews, but, here goes.
I had to on this one, because, this book has been wonderfully enjoyed by me and my two kids for many reasons.
It is a wonderfully written, informative how to book that takes you through something as daunting to myself as bee-keeping and it has opened up a whole new world of fun possibilities for me and my two kids! Seriously!
I bought the book on a whim, for many reasons, one, I like collecting books on crafting, do-it-your self projects, you name it, and.... I always have this goal of farm to table adventures, and bee-keeping is for me the top.... a secret wish that I never thought I'd actually be able to do.
Then arrives this book!
Firstly, it is really well-written. Not one of those how to books you just thumb through and mark pages...it has great stories about people doing small hives and showing you how you can too! I love that, it is very personal, and you instantly feel part of a fun community. It is easy to understand, and keeps you engaged with facts and everything you need to know-isms without being pretentious, dull, or repetitive. My daughter did a science project on honey bees and how important they are to our eco-system, and she was excited that that information was in there, too, a long with so much more we didn't know. We read the whole book together in just a couple of days, and have started our own plan! We are REALLY EXCITED!!
There are a lot of really great photos, and the photos are just beautiful, it is such a picturesque book, and I can't say enough of how the book is just really, really cute, and pretty, I love all the artwork and the layout of the pages, and the way the sections and chapters are organized, it is wonderful to remember it all, it flows really nicely.... It was really fun reading with my kids, and we are excited about starting our own hive this spring, it's really fun to think of all that is possible and involved with bee-keeping, who knew? You have to get this book and find out!!! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in something to read about with their kids, or who loves crafts, hobbys, gardening, and, of course bees!
I will definitely be looking for more books from this author!

Very good bee-ginners book. I would not recommend this to anyone who has read other bee books though. The information is useful but very basic. Newbee and not sure about beekeeping?- great first book

But she realizes that the experience of being at the sea has changed her, and she's confident that she will carry this specific ocean with her: "Calm. Blue. Ruffled. Gray. Playful. Green. Mysterious," not unlike her feelings. Mixed-media illustrations use soft lines and a muted palette for an almost ethereal effect, successfully evoking the ocean and its wonders. Beautiful and Soothing

This sweetly quiet story of a little girl who slowly falls in love with the Pacific Ocean brought me a sense of wonder! At the beginning the girl is reluctant to get in the water, but she gradually comes to love playing in and around the ocean. Her dreamy observations and imaginings around the seaside are just lovely, and bring the reader immediately into the story. You can taste that salt air and feel the waves pulling at your feet!

The writing is absolutely brilliant! Every word is tailored perfectly for that sentence to say exactly what it should, but it never feels forced or like it’s trying too hard. Each sentence flows to the next with the rhythm of ocean waves.

The words are so rich and vibrant too! “Grumping down the path” perfectly describes a child walking grumpily, even though “grumping” is not actually a word, I think. No matter, because it is just the RIGHT word, whether it exists or not. There are perfect words like that on every page of this book!

What a delight it would be to read this book aloud! The sounds of the words roll off the tongue and down the lips like drops of water splashing off a wave… “Shine, shimmer, gleam, glow…” and with four words, I can see the seashore in my mind’s eye.

I love that the girl mistakenly calls it the “specific ocean” instead of the “pacific ocean”, but decides that the former name is more appropriate after all. I have heard kids say it wrong all the time, so it rings true and touches my heart. Details like that are what make this book so special!

The illustrations fit the story like a glove. Calming colors and smooth lines leave me feeling soothed and dreamy. Warmth and light shine from every page!

There is magic in this book! Undeniably, this is a masterpiece of children’s literature.

Calm, reflective story

"There is no late or hurry or racing in ocean time."

This story follows a little girl who goes on a family vacation to the Pacific Ocean. At first, she is upset, but she slowly comes around and grows to love the Ocean and everything in it.

I liked the pacing of the writing. I feel like so many children's books just have made up words jumping out at you from the page. This was mellow and had real writing. I got a similar feeling from the artwork--it was nice and calm and captured the different moods of the little girl.

I would recommend this book as I feel like the style and story are a nice change of pace.

This book was beautiful. As a lover of the ocean, this book called out to me. I had to request it. I suspected (and was right!) that this is about the pacific ocean. The detail the author writes with made it feel like I was there. The young girl in this story, who hates being away from the city at it's start, hates it when it's time to leave. The pictures are beautifully done. Very calming. Really makes me long for the ocean!

Lots of Good Ideas, Some Dangerous but Nothing Radical

All in all, this is an excellent book that is well worth the price. Some of the entries on self-reliance and promoting freedom are fabulous and the book provides plenty of links and resources for further information. Many times, I found myself putting the book down to go to the computer and follow up on an idea or product. It should be noted, however, that readers should be careful in their approach. Fun With Superglue and other segments dealing with fake ID's could get you in significant trouble for little benefit. One of the most valuable aspects of this book was that it made me think about practical aspects of Freedom and Revolution. At what point do we, as Freedom-Loving Americans, get off the couch and take the steps necessary to remove an irrevocably corrupt government? This book will open your mind and expand your horizons.

Must have

I haven't read the book yet but based on all of Wolfe's writings I know this is a great book. I can't stop laughing about her novel Hardyville - it will actually bring tears to your eyes. I had to order several copies of this book because when I showed people the Intro they wanted this book. People are hungry for the truth and I think it will deliver. Anyway, thumbs up and stars all around.

Claire Wolfe is on target and very witty

Claire Wolfe's writing style runs right up my alley since I love a good sense of humor and wry wit. I addition to being informative you will laugh out loud at her tips on how to protect your privacy among a myriad of other things. I have read several of her books--totally love "The Hardyville Tales"--and have never been disappointed by her.

They've killed strangers, their own families, and business associates--and they all had their reasons.

Like having a dear old friend over for dinner, SERIAL KILLER TIMELINES: ILLUSTRATED ACCOUNTS OF THE WORLD'S MOST GRUESOME MURDERS is a walk down memory lane. Not good memories, mind you, but true crime aficionados will be familiar with many (if not all) the murderers found in this book.

The first true crime book I ever read was about Randy Kraft. Kraft was so evil, his story ignited a passion to find out more about serial killers. Although the repugnant details are enough to put one off rare meat for decades, my interest has been in two areas: 1) criminology (forensics and detection), and 2) psychology (what were they thinking?). Having read the "true story" of scores of serial killers, I'm pretty sure that whatever they were thinking is not something I've ever thought (or maybe I'm just better at sublimating).

SERIAL KILLER TIMELINES is divided into five chapters, beginning with "A Lust for Killing." Cases covered are the infamous John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy, as well as the prolific Andrei Chikatilo, Pedro Lopez, Harold Shipman, and Gary Ridgeway. The second chapter, "Special Desires," includes--as you would expect--Jeffrey Dahmer and Albert Fish, as well as H.H. Holmes, Joachim Kroll, Dennis Nilsen, Edmund Kemper, and Richard Ramirez. Some of the cases go back to the late nineteenth century (such as Chapter 3's Jack the Ripper), most are from the twentieth century, and a few were active in the twenty-first century.

The third chapter is "Predators;" in addition to the Whitechapel Killer, there are David Berkowitz, Robert Hansen, Randy Kraft, The Yorkshire Ripper, and the Beltway sniper attacks. Chapter four is relatively short; its "Female Murderers" are Jane Toppan, Dorothea Puente, and Aileen Wuornos. The final chapter presents "Serial Killer Couples": the Moors Murderers, The Hillside Stranglers, and Fred and Rosemary West.

Author Chris McNab provides readers with an overview of each killer, a timeline for one of their crimes, a chronological list of crimes and known victims, and hundreds of photos. With so many killers and victims, it must have been tough to keep them straight. There are several instances where the text is contradicted by photography captions, and at least one known murder omitted from the Beltway Killers (others are buried--as they should be--so deep in my memory, I don't recall all the details). Despite these minor flaws, SERIAL KILLER TIMELINES is a noteworthy collection citing the evil that men--and women--do.

Interested readers who have never read true crime books might take this one in small doses. Reading ghastly details with which I was already familiar was not too disturbing, but those unfamiliar with the criminals and crimes might find them unsettling. Represented within SERIAL KILLER TIMELINES are some of the most horrific acts one human being can perpetrate against another.

An overly simplified presentation of the subject. There is not enough analysis. Mostly the book is just a bunch of lists of the murders arranged chronologically with minimal commentary or analysis.
