The history of Theology starts with Origen's First Principles

Origen's Systematic Theology:
Origen theology, rests mainly on two of his works,'On First Principles,' and 'Contra Celsus', his defense of Christianity, in response to the attacks of the pagan philosopher. On First Principles, is Origen's major systematic and philosophical work where he established his main doctrines, including that of the Holy Trinity, the preexistence and fall of souls, transmigration of souls, and the eventual restoration of them, in proximity to the Godhead, in 'Theosis', a state of gradual faithful metaphormism into perfection. He was pioneer in his insistence on the free will of souls. He is unique, introducing history, within his speculations on metaphysical cosmology, that it became a saying, "No theology without Cosmology."
Berkhoff wrote defining the History of Dogmatics, "Origen was the first to construct something like a system of theology. His work was written about the year 218 AD., in it he attempts to transform the doctrine of the Church into a speculative science, acceptable to the cultural and philosophical classes of his day."

On First Principles:
Origen was probably not more than thirty, when he wrote De principiis (On First Principles), perhaps his greatest work in systematic theology, to express Christian faith in Neoplatonic terms, Saccha's Christianized philosophy of Alexandria. Most of 'De principiis' is expressed in an orthodox Christian universal thought, and there is no evidence that he ever modified in any respect. The first book of De Principiis deals with God and creation; the second and third with Creation and Providence, with Man and Redemption; and the fourth with Holy Scripture.
Written for scholars, Origen affirms one God, creator and ruler of the universe, Jesus Christ begotten before all creation, divine in His incarnation, and the Holy Spirit in the glory of the Father. He expressed that humans depend in their existence on the Father, their rational nature from the Son, and their holiness from the Holy Spirit. In spite of his guiding principle; 'Nothing which is at variance with the tradition of the apostles and of the church is to be accepted as true,' Origen's genius speculative flights lead some early church leaders to question his orthodoxy.

Koetschau's Reconstruction:
Koetschau's work to recover the original, of De Principiis is a great work, of few peers in philosophy or Patristic literature. His edition of Origen's lost Greek original writings, is a reconstruction from fragments from Greek and Latin quotations. Koetschau reconstruction although helpful for text continuity had necessarily to fill lots of gaps, based on his best guess. Butterworth, complex statements trying to be precise may have caused confusion. He comments on a Koetschau's reconstruction as, "a composite passage from Gregory of Nyssa," or, "...Koetschau's arguments for including it in the text of Origen are given in his introduction, pp. 117-118," and so on.
Rowan Greer, in 'Origen: An exhortation to Martyrdom, Prayer, etc.' was more explicit, for more than ten times repeating, "there follows koetschau's conjectural attempt to fill a lacuna of 'x' lines in the manuscript."

Of all the great Origen's works, his "On First Principles" was the most monumental. It was the first attempt to formulate a coherent system of Christian philosophy, and it also is the best expression of the theologian's general opinions. The work is divided into four parts: book one essentially deals with God and creation, book two with creation (rational and irrational natures), providence, and redemption, and book four with the interpretation of Holy Scripture. Origen's views are based upon the authority of the Scriptures and Church tradition, and his theology is grounded upon the tenets of Neoplatonism. In "On First Principles" many erudite and sublime maxims are given as to the nature of the Trinity, the person of Christ, and man's free will under the hand of Providence, most of which are considered Orthodox teachings. On the other hand, the principles found in this work, which engendered controversy and were later condemned (Fifth Ecumenical Council 553), are the pre-existence and transmigration of souls, and universal salvation at the consummation of the world. So, it will be safe to say that this Christian, the most original and influential thinker until St Augustine, is always sincere in his faith and strictly orthodox wherever reason and curiosity failed to take him too far. This edition, being Koetschau's English text translated from Rufinus' definitive Latin volume, contains selected fragments of St Jerome's rendition and the meager remains of the original Greek texts in order furnish a more comprehensive view of Origen's writings. Also included are in-depth introductions to Origin's life and works by the scholar G. W. Butterworth and the eminent Henri Cardinal de Lubac, the French Jesuit theologian and Church historian. This work is highly recommended for anyone interested in patristic studies

A critical edition of Origen's central work

This is the definitive English traslation of Koetschau's (please, Amazon, note the spelling!) edition of Origen's central work. Because the orginal Greek has been lost, it is necessary to reconstruct the original from fragments from all kinds of sources. This Koetschau does, although his use of these sources is a little too liberal in spots. Nevertheless it is helpful in recovering the original, especially in view of Rufinus' defective translation. As a work, it has few peers in Patristic literature. It represents Origen at the start of his career as a theologian and Christian teacher. Many of his speculations are very daring, so much so that in at least one case (the transmigration of souls) he changes his position in later years. (He may have on others, but most of his work is lost today.) But his insistence on free will as the driving force behind the fall of man was revolutionary in his fatalistic time and, to some extent, still is.

A fascinating and very controversial work.

Like its predecessors, The Bastard King (2003) and The Chernagor Pirates (2004), the good-natured, leisurely final installment in Chernenko's Scepter of Mercy trilogy subverts the familiar fantasy tropes with its polite, understated swordplay and minimal, often mundane sorcery. In the kingdom of Avornis, an unseen array of Olympian gods and goddesses has ejected a disgruntled god known as the Banished One. He may also be unseen, but the Banished One is a noisy frequenter of the nightmares of his victims, whom he attempts with mixed success to suborn. The author excels at characterization, in particular of the pair of down-to-earth Avornis kings: Grus, the thinking man's head of warfare, and Lanius, the thinking man's thinker. The two rivals must set aside their differences if they are to regain the scepter that will thwart the Banished One's evil machinations. Some readers may be annoyed not to be let in on Lanius's secret plan to do so, though all should be satisfied with the natural, somewhat bittersweet ending that leaves the door open for further wise and humorous adventures.

While it helps to have read this book's two predecessors, The Bastard King (2003) and The Chernagor Pirates [BKL Mr 1 04], the third book in the series stands on its own without difficulty. The land of Avornis has suffered the enmity of the banished god for a long time. The only weapon that can withstand him is the scepter of mercy. Now Lanius and Grus, the two kings of Avornis, just may be able to recover the scepter. Lanius has a plan that must remain secret from the banished one. Grus must do battle, for the scepter lies in the lands of the hostile Menteshe peoples. Chernenko's world isn't especially distinctive, but his characterization, dialogue, and plotting keep one involved right up to the twist ending. Good basic fantasy storytelling, especially appealing to readers just beginning to explore the genre. Frieda Murray

This is the third volume and climax to the "Scepter of Mercy" Trilogy, which consists of the following books:

1) The Bastard King: Scepter of Mercy, Book One
2) The Chernagor Pirates (Scepter of Mercy, Book 2)
3) The Scepter's Return

These books were written by Harry Turtledove using the pen-name Dan Chernenko. Apparently he felt the books were different from his usual subject matter and wanted to see the reaction they would get without his name. The most recent printings actually do have his name on the cover, followed by "writing as Dan Chernenko".

In the previous volumes, unusual political manouvers caused the situation where the Kingdom of Avornis had two kings at the same time: King Lanius, descended from a long line of kings, and King Grus, the son of a guardsman.

The Kingdom of Avornis is beset by enemies on all sides, particularly by barbarians to the south, in territory ruled by the immortal "Banished one" who used to be a God before the other Gods expelled him from heaven. King Lanius has discovered that the Banished one was previously worshipped as Milvago, the principal god. Milvago has stolen from Avornis a powerful talisman for peace, the Scepter of Mercy, which had been given to the Kingdom of Avornis by the Gods who supplanted him.

Strong rivalry remains between Lanius and Grus, but neither wants to tear the country apart in civil war when they have so many dangerous enemies: both would like to get the Scepter of Mercy back from the Banished one. But strife between Lanius and Grus is not the only possible threat to the peace of Avornis: King Grus has been watching his fellow King like a hawk as long as they have shared the throne but neglected to consider a possible threat from even closer to home.

Meanwhile Lanius has thought of an ingenious scheme to recover the Scepter of Mercy ...

Some readers absolutely hated this series, other, of whom I was one, greatly enjoyed it. There books do have both the strengths and weaknesses of many of Harry Turtledove's books. For example, there is a strong storyline, well crafted and believable characters - but he does tend to repeat things an awful lot. I also had some difficulty with the fact that the Banished One seems to have a kind of selective omniscience: if that sounds like an oxymoron it's because what he knows and doesn't not do not quite make sense.

Milvago has enough awareness of what Lanius and Grus are plotting to be able to send both the kings themselves, and also one of the key players in their plans, horrible nightmares to try to put them off. Yet he doesn't seem to know enough to give his supporters some fairly simple instructions by which he should have been able to make the plan impossible. I suppose since his mortal heroes were up against a defrocked God, Turtledove had to put some limits on how their enemy could use his powers to give them a chance.

There is a similar and more explicitly explained depiction of interaction between pre-industrial humans, and Gods who are much more powerful than humans but neither omnipotent nor omniscient, in a novel which Turtledove published under his real name, Between the Rivers.

Apart from these minor flaws this is a really enjoyable trilogy.

Great Ending for a Series

If you want to read this be sure you've read the Scepter of Mercy and Chernagor Pirates which are the first two stories in this series. Turtledove is absolutely one of the best writers out there. This series draws heavily on his knowledge of Byzantine history for which he earned a Ph.D. The characters are well developed - no cookie cutter heroes here. The pace is deliberate, solutions in real life take time and he conveys this very well. This whole series is classical Turtledove, so if you've been somewhat disappointed with his Yellowstone volcano tales or even the War the Came Early series this is the style I came to appreciate years ago. Since he wrote this series under another name I didn't read them when they first came out over a decade ago. No spoilers, but the ending caught me by surprise. Well worth the read.

Full of useful information and chocked full of links to sites about feeders and books. Enjoyed looking through all the sites listed. You should like this as a guide to have on hand about how to attract certain species and how not to attract those you don't want. A few pictures but not for identifying species. Need a different book for that.

An excellent volume for the home cook

I've seen a number of books before from the CIA that were clearly for student and working chefs - recipes and instructions heavy on the technical specifications and light on the images. That's fine for the cook with heavy experience, but tough on the average kitchen denizen. So I was delighted to see The Culinary Institute of America Vegetables: Recipes and Techniques from the World's Premier Culinary College.

Let's ignore the very last claim, as restaurant schools from Johnson & Wales to those in Zurich, France, and Germany might disagree. Physically this is a well-illustrated and designed book. Recipes are laid out with the steps on one page, ingredients running vertically next to the steps, and a full color picture facing. That's critical, because students in a culinary school get to see the food when the instructors show them how to make it. But if you've never laid eyes on a dish, it's difficult to tell whether your results are correct or not.

The one place where the visuals are lacking is in basic preparation and cooking techniques as well as information on storage and individual vegetable types. But, realistically, economic realities come into play. The volume is already just over 290 pages long at a suggest price of $40; any more, and it would quickly hit the $70 and higher price of culinary text books, putting it out of the price range of all but the most ardent home cooks.

Recipe organization is in a standard set of categories: soups, appetizers, salads, entr�es, side dishes, and sauces and relishes. What is unusual for a book covering vegetables is that it's not vegetarian; there are some recipes that include meat. I was actually happy to see that. Too often vegetables are treated as accompaniments to meats, poultry, and fish, and not as integral parts of the recipe concepts. Those who eschew eating that which moved about at one time won't like those parts of the book, but for most people, I think it's a sound approach. I also saw enough unusual dishes - such as Thai Fresh Pea Soup and Hoisin-Caramelized Root Vegetables - that this collection is unlikely to be a duplicate of the standard "exotic" recipes that you find turning up in one book after another. I look forward to the next volume they do in this fashion.

Book of recipes, not a "cookbook"

I was looking forward to this title to complement the material in some of the other great CIA titles I have with some veggie-specific information. However, in contrast to those titles, it is little more than a collection of recipes without the in-depth sections on ingredients and techniques that I have come to expect from the CIA.

The "cooking" part of this volume is barely 25 pages long; not enough to give any depth to any of its discussions. From there it launches into a collection of specific recipes using vegetables, without providing "master recipes" for any. For example, "How can I roast beets?" isn't answered with a direct "400� for 45-60 minutes in a foil packet" kind of answer anywhere. The recipes seem to be repeats from other (recommended) CIA books I have, such as The Professional Chef, 8th Edition, Cooking at Home with The Culinary Institute of America, and Techniques of Healthy Cooking, Professional Edition.

The recipes aren't organized by vegetable, as I might have liked, but by course (e.g., salads, appetizers, entries, etc). As a result, I do not find it easy to use as a "go-to" resource on my bookshelf.

This book would be at home on the coffee table of someone that has immaculate, polished stainless steel or copper All-Clad pots and Global knives on display in their kitchen. If your All-Clad and Japanese knives fall into more into the well-loved category, I'd save your money on this one.

(Interestingly, this is published by Lebhar-Friedman Books rather than Wiley -- No idea if that means anything in general.)

Welcoming and true to the pictures

The book has enticing pictures of the recipes and has nostalgic images of vegetable growers' packages.(love them) The recipes are reasonable, up to date, and the informational snip-its are well laid out. Do not be afraid to try a recipe twice, the ingredients are inexpensive enough to have a trial run before you prepare them for company. The CIA has published a mountain of books and I feel that this cookbook is one of the better ones. I would have enjoyed a few more exotic vegetables for the adventurous, but overall the book is worthy of shelf space in any kitchen.

About the Author

Marge Lial has always been interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College. Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

 

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

 

David Schneider has taught mathematics at universities for over 34 years and has authored 36 books. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a PhD in mathematics from MIT. During most of his professional career, he was on the faculty of the University of Maryland--College Park. His hobbies include travel, dancing, bicycling, and hiking.

 

Callie Daniels has always had a passion for learning mathematics and brings that passion into the classroom with her students. She attended the University of the Ozarks on an athletic scholarship, playing both basketball and tennis. While there, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education as well as the NAIA Academic All-American Award. She has two master’s degrees: one in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Missouri-Rolla, the second in Adult Education from the University of Missouri- St. Louis. Her hobbies include watching her sons play sports, riding horses, fishing, shooting photographs, and playing guitar. Her professional interests include improving success in the community college mathematics sequence, using technology to enhance students’ understanding of mathematics, and creating materials that support classroom teaching and student understanding.

I first learned trigonometry 26 years ago, and am currently a tutor in a Tutoring Center where math and English are the primary calls for our assistance. We started using this book on Trigonometry by Lial, Hornsby and Schneider last year, and it has been a real aid to all of us.

The chapters are designed with brief overviews, 'Chapter Openers', at the beginning of each. There are sample exercises in the explanations, as well as exercises in the problem sets keyed to specific application of examples. There are summary exercises that give review of mixed concepts, pull-quote boxes (here called 'Function Boxes') to highlight the reference aspect of the text, and useful chapter reviews to the same.

One thing that stands out about this text from the one I used so many years ago is the colour aspect. There are pictures, multi-coloured graphs and illustrations, and a general feel to the book that makes it visually worthwhile to look at. This book also takes advantage of the increasing sophistication of calculators - again, back when I took trigonometry, there were tables of data in the back for looking things up, since calculators (such as they were) had only add/subtract/multiply/divide functions.

The chapters go in a fairly standard pattern for trigonometry. Chaptes progress from basic Trigonometric Functions, defining triangular and angular ideas. This continues more in depth with Acute Angles and Right Angles, then proceeds to Circular Functions, introducing Radian Measures in for good measure. The fourth chapter introduces graphing ideas for the circular functions (sine, cosine, etc.), while the sixth chapter introduces the idea of the inverse circular and trigonometric functions. Other chapters include trigonometric identities (this always seemed to me to be like geometry or logic using trig functions), vectors, complex numbers, polar equations, exponential and logarithmic functions. Many of these concepts have direct application in engineering and other sciences.

This book is also geared for students who will be advancing on to calculus, and gives marginal notes on how trigonometry is used in calculus (so as to pre-empt the question, 'when am I ever going to use this?').

Actually, I found trigonometry to be among the more enjoyable math courses I ever took; together with geometry, it confirmed an early love of the discovery of patterns and symmetry in the very fabric of existence. This book reminds me of those early days of exploring ideas, and it is a pleasure to share these same ideas with new students via this text.

Awesome deal

Why I purchased: My book was stolen from me at school and I needed a quick replacement. This was an acceptable substitute for the book we were using in class, so I was seeking to find the least expensive version just to replace my old book for the rest of the year. Not even paying $5, this book would be an excellent substitute for the one that I had been stolen from me. I barely lost any time with prime shipping and the quality is very good.

What I love: It was marked as "very good" and it definitely is! There is nothing that impairs the book's details, and for such a low price, I'm actually shocked that it is in such nice condition! The eighth edition has everything that I need and isn't too different from my old book. I really can't believe I got it for less than $5.

What I don't love: I have zero complaints related to this product, as it came when it was supposed to, does its job perfectly, and was so inexpensive.

Conclusion: I recommend purchasing from this seller! Everything was described accurately and was at such a decent price. Thanks for the book!

A very bad book if you want to learn.

The book was in awesome conditions, but I'm giving it two stars because the book really sucks. It explains everything in a really vague way. If you wanna learn ,you will have to go to Khan academy and watch some videos. It sometimes explains a whole section in one page and gives you like four pages of exercises which you will not be able to solve with a one page explanation.

Eye Opening!

This book is packed with so much information simply reading it twice isn't enough, you'll need to make a few pots of coffee in order to digest all the information made available in this book. Rohit takes a unique approach to organizing and presenting material in this book, while the humor lacks in the book it is technically sound and straight forward. Few books have amazed me, and I've probably reviewed 100 books by now, this one has left a mark on my brain that will last for the remainder of my life. Now, that is certainly a bold claim and I certify this book is well worth such a claim. While I would have liked to seen some work on fingerprint passwords that was simply not covered in the book, but you'll be happy to know that swipe patterns are covered which are still in wide use today.

From the setup of the environment required to do the forensic work, theory behind the work involved, and then applying it in real world examples make this book worth the cost. My favorite part about this book would have to be the use of JTAG to recover data from damaged devices, and why you should smash your phone into a billion pieces if you have something to hide of great importance. This book is an eye opener and should be read by anyone who is paranoid about their security, and probably why you should or shouldn't root your Android device. The author answers everything clearly and concise with litter room for misunderstanding the message behind the learning activity. The frozen device was actually really intriguing, at a certain temperature the memory contained data longer and allowed data extraction, simply brilliant if I do say so myself.

Recovering delete files, application data, and the many methods to do so are covered. I've looked over this book a few dozen times already and still shake my head at the various recovery options available despite the 'security' appliances allowed on the device and how easily they're bypassed. So in short, don't do anything that you'd have to hide or you'll be pretty shocked when they uncover the deleted data you thought was gone forever!

It is a well organised and informative book in general and it is especially friendly for Android beginners. As the nature of Android is also Linux, I would recommend this book to people who also interested in Linux forensics. The book depicts core aspects of digital forensics and provides a clear picture of Android system. It reveals several concrete techniques and methods for doing forensic jobs on Android. In addition, this book also tells readers the relevant tools and other references which readers can go further with. I've also read when I was in graduate school. is more technical oriented so readers with less background may find that book hard to follow.

A Good book for the begineers of Android Forensics.

This book is very good for the beginners of Android Forensics. In each chapter, it illustrates the whole process with detailed explanations and screen shots. This book also introduces a lot handy tools you can use for different purpose and different scenario, for example, the tool you can use to dig the deleted information in SQLite database file, which they are usually used to store Text message, Email, Calendar events and so on.

However, as far as I know, this book will not tell you how to prevent forensics target been damaged or modified during the investigation process.
It will not tell you how to persistent these evidence you extracted from the target device so that they can be used on the court. It will not tell you whether the tools introduced by this book can be used in the real world, real case.

But in general, this is a good book for these beginners, just like what the title said "Learning Android Forensics".
