Serves as a great foundation platform for teaching important thinking

Joel knocked it out of the park on this one!

As a clinician (LSW) who works with ASD youth, one of the greatest challenges is helping them conceptualize that it's not all about them, their wants, needs, interests and desires. There is a peculiarity within their brains that it seems just doesn't connect like us so-called typically developed humans. They need a bridge to see that bigger piece. This book has three things that work well: 1 - Its really attractive/compelling, the pictures are a HIT. 2 - The teaching is graphical and simple, they get it w/o a lot of talk talk talk-ing. 3 - And its conceived in a manner that they just GET, it goes with the way these kids process and think.

Joel knows his stuff. I use this book over and over. In fact (no lie) they say to me, "Oh, did you bring The Green Zone book today!!!?" Now that says everything when working with this population!

---- also I highly recommend Joel's book "Our Brains Are Like Computers!" I use it all the time.
Well worth the money and both are well made books!!!

This book was a hit with 8-yr old

This book was a hit with my 8-yr old nephew. It is very well organized, particularly the coordination between the recommended activities and worksheets as they relate to each chapter of the book. My nephew was really engaged in the activities as well as our reading of the book together, and the worksheets helped expand his perspective of conversation and finding mutual interests. This is an excellent book and it really gave my nephew many "ah ha!" moments.

great resource for teaching some conversation skills

great book with awesome visuals to explain how to find a common topic with a conversational partner. The book is very well done and has several parts to it - could be used over and over to teach students these conversational skills - I just wish it came with a digital version as well so I could display it on the computer projector.

On March 30, 1282, as the church bells of Palermo were sounding vespers, a crowd of Sicilians fell on a party of French soldiers, the enforcers of Angevin rule over the island. Within minutes the French lay dead. The Palermo revolt spread quickly across Sicily, opposed by Frankish lords and the Italian clergy, and supported by Sicilian commoners, Aragonese infiltrators, and Byzantine spies. Against a complicated multinational backdrop, the noted medieval historian Steven Runciman deftly portrays the tangled world of Mediterranean politics in the 13th century, the apex of the Middle Ages.

Sicilian History Expertly Done

In the early spring of 1282 a great fleet lay at anchor in the harbor of Palermo, Sicily. The commander of the fleet, Charles of Anjou, brother of King (and later Saint) Louis of France, and by the blessing of the Pope and his own political machinations, King of the Two Sicilies, planned to attack the Byzantine capital of Constantinople and re-establish the Latin Empire, with himself as Emperor. For Charles, a man of formidable military and administrative talent, and considerable political ruthlessness, the possibility of being an emperor, of dominating the Mediterranean world, must have seemed so close that he could not fail to grasp the opportunity. And then everything changed.
The Sicilian Vespers, by the late Sir Steven Runciman, is the story of the late 13th century European world that created Charles of Anjou. Runciman describes in considerable, and very interesting detail, the interplay of politics and religion at that time, especially the bare knuckle politicking of the Popes, whose attempts at creating a universal Christendom ruled by the papacy eventually lessened respect not only for the individual popes involved, but for the papacy as an institution as well. The interweaving lines of narrative come together on the evening of March 29th, Easter Monday, of 1282, when a group of drunken Frenchmen arrived outside the Church of the Holy Spirit in Palermo just as the crowd of worshippers was going in for the Vespers service. One of the Frenchmen made advances, or actually tried to rape, a young Sicilian woman. Her outraged husband killed the Frenchman, and when the Frenchmen's friends drew their swords, the crowd jumped them and killed them as well. The oppressed Sicilians then went on a rampage through the streets of Palermo, screaming Moranu il Franchkisi [Death to the French!] and slaughtering every Frenchman they could find, including French priests, nuns, and monks, as well as Sicilian women who had married Frenchmen. The rebellion rapidly spread to other cities across Sicily.
Runciman expertly weaves together the story of what happened and why it happened and what the consequences of the great rebellion were for Charles and the Sicilians and for a papacy more interested in politics than religion. There might be a better book on this subject somewhere, but I tend to doubt it; Runciman writes in clear and understandable English, a talent not usually cultivated by academic historians in the United States, and he knows his subject backwards and forwards. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in the Middle Ages, and to anyone interested in how history ought to be written.

Byzantine diplomacy was the best in the world...

Sir Steven Runciman was one of the leading scholars of the Middle Ages. He also had a profound understanding of diplomacy and warfare. He is not only the author of this book, but also several books on the Crusades and Byzantium. However, this I feel is his best book. First of all it is a wonderful story. This is how the Byzantine empire managed with no army, no navy, very little money, but with a great deal of diplomacy and intelligence to prevent a planned invasion from the mightiest power in 100 years. This book should be required reading for all statesmen, would be statesmen, and military planners. Runciman describes here how things can go wrong regardless of ability, manpower, and money when one is faced with a very clever foe.

Well researched, well written piece of scholastic history

I was pleasantly surprised to find this a well-informed piece of modern historical anayalsis of the later thirteenth Mediterranean history. The book focuses primarily on the careers of both Manfred and Charles and their struggle to maintain an outdated concept of ancient imperialism. More than anything this book clearly shows the final transistions from an autocratical imperial Europe to a papal-dominated fractured set of European vassal states.
It is interesting for its succinct prose and deliberate factual outlay. Rather than seeking to impress upon his own ideas, Runciman deliberately tells us the history from a Latin perspective without impression of telling a story with all its propagandistic baggage. Don't be fooled by the usual publisher gumph on the back. The incident in Palermo in 1282 is used as a focal point for the history rather than being the main point of discussion and the work succeeds all the more for it.
A hugely impressive piece of scholastic history and, I would think, a vital book for any serious student of thirteenth century Mediterranean history.

About the Author
Professor Halgin received his Ph. D. from Fordham University, and completed a 3-year fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, prior to joining the faculty of the University of Massachusetts in 1977. He is a Board Certified Clinical Psychologist and has had over two decades of clinical, supervisory, and consulting experience. At the University of Massachusetts, his course in Abnormal Psychology is one of the most popular offerings on campus, attracting an enrollment of more than 500 students each semester. In recent years, he has also offered this course at Amherst College and Smith College. His teaching has been recognized at the university and national level. A University of Massachusetts Alumni Distinguished Professor, he was honored with the University's Distinguished Teaching Award and his teaching was recognized by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology of the American Psychological Association. In April 2003, his teaching was highlighted in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Professor Halgin is the author of more than fifty journal articles and book chapters in the fields of psychotherapy, clinical supervision, and professional issues in psychology.

In the fourth decade since the emergence of HIV/AIDS, many today are questioning whether the effort and money spent on this health crisis has in fact helped or exacerbated the problem. Wonderful, meaningful story!

Ever since he was a little kid, Liam wasn't little. By the time he turns twelve, he's way taller than his dad, let alone his classmates. He has to shave. Everyone mistakes him for an adult--and he hates it. Until...he's the only kid allowed to ride the new super ride at the amusement park...and adults treat him with respect...and he (almost) gets away with test-driving a Porsche. And he somehow cons his way into being the "parent chaperone" to the first four kids in space. Which is absolutely cosmic, as he would say--until the kids start acting like typical kids and break the ship. What they need is a dad to come rescue them--but Liam is the only dad they've got.
You come across a few books in your lifetime that really surprise you. You come across a few that make you laugh until you're crying. You come across a few that have such profound depth and meaning that when you finish them they settle into your gut so you'll always remember the way you felt reading them. You hardly ever come across one that embodies all these qualities; Cosmic is such a book. I finished it a week ago and held off writing the review so I didn't just gush meaninglessly (I did that to my family and friends). Now that I've stopped raving, here are my more organized thoughts:
To start with the negative (note the use of the singular), the structure was confusing. Liam begins telling his story to his parents from space, through recording himself on his phone--which makes for a very cool opening. But once we get to the point in the story where he began telling it, there is a disconnect. The time and circumstances have to be reestablished a few times, which can be disorienting. Unfortunately, it felt that a story which could more simply have been told in past tense after it was all over, began in the middle for the sake of a killer opening paragraph.
That said--deal with the confusion. Seriously. Because... we're on to the positives: brilliant voice, wonderful humor, the coolest tribute to Roald Dahl ever. (You'll have to figure it out yourselves.) If you like Science fiction, you'll be impressed by the author's attention to research and detail; if you don't, you'll still love Cosmic for the characters, the story, the subtlety with which a very important message is conveyed.
Ok, I'm going to go gush to my family some more now.

3.5 stars--TEASING THE BOSS is the second installment in Mallory Crowe’s contemporary adult Billionaires in the City romance series of novellas. This is business consultant Simon West (first introduced to the reader in book one-Teaching the Boss), and event organizer Grace Bell. TEASING THE BOSS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from dual third person perspectives TEASING THE BOSS follows Grace as she attempts to clear her name in a scandal involving a married US senator. Caught by the paparazzi in the arms of said US senator hit Grace in more ways than one-her business as an events coordinator starting dropping off as she became persona non-grata in the social circles, and the reputation as the woman who broke up a senator’s marriage. What no one knew was that Grace has been set up as the fall girl for another one of the senator’s wrong doings. Enter Simon West-a business consultant whose clients required a no nonsense approach to getting the job done.

When Simon discovers that Grace knows the man that Simon has been trying to take down, he offers Grace a deal she cannot refuse. Simon’s best friend committed suicide following an investment scandal that went horribly wrong, and Simon has spent months researching and investigating investment banker Mark DuFord and his connections to a billion dollar financial scheme. Simon and Grace will pretend to be lovers, with no strings attached, but the plan hopelessly fails when Grace begins to fall for the man in charge.

The relationship between Grace and Simon begins as a business arrangement: Grace needs help repairing the damage brought about by the lies and tabloid innuendo, and Simon needs Grace to help him retrieve inside information about Mark Duford. What begins as a tentative friendship soon becomes something more but Simon knows that his relationship with Grace is only a temporary job, and in this Simon will begin to push Grace away when Mark shifts gears and aims his financial and political clout against Simon and Grace. The $ex scenes are intimate, provocative and hot without the over the top erotic feature but the sexual attraction between our couple felt off-everything seemed to be part of a business arrangement. I didn’t feel the need; the want; or the desire. Once again, there is little to no graphic or sexually explicit language.

I want to add that I had a few issues with the lack of condom usage throughout the series, thus far. It is not enough for the female heroine to be on the BC pill, as our hero’s like to believe, because as we know, the only thing the BC pill prevents is a pregnancy –and even that isn’t 100% effective. In this day and age, I think the authors should be proactive with their storyline characters as it pertains to safe sex and the potential for sexually transmitted disease.

The secondary characters include several of Grace’s clients, her co-workers and assistants, as well as a few new friends we will meet along the way. We will be introduced to Grace’s all-around go to guy Dean Carey, and billionaire businesswoman, and a friend of Simon’s, Victoria Green whose life will begin to fall apart as her father lies dying, and her ‘brat’ of a brother tries to regain control of the family business she saved from ruin. Dean and Victoria’s story will be told next in TEMPTING THE BOSS.

Mallory Crowe’s world of self made billionaires looks at the not so pretty side of big business and the corporate world of high finance and power. Money makes for some strange bedfellows; greed forces men to choose; and betrayal is but a phone call away. The characters are colorful; the premise fast paced and revealing. A enjoyable read for a lazy afternoon.

Teasing the Boss is a Great Read That I Highly Recommend. Loved it!!!

This book was a real pleaser and even a bit better than book one, in my opinion. I highly recommend you read this but my advice would be to start with book one. You'll get back story.

I was not so sure I was going to be a fan of Simon's after the first book but boy was I wrong. I fell almost as much in love with him as Grace did. Simon, who can turn around any struggling business, appears arrogant and entirely too sure of himself...but in a way he has a may have a right to be with his track record in resurrecting businesses that are about to go under for whatever reason. When he is tracked down by Grace he has met his match. Grace is a strong, beautiful, confident, and endearing entrepreneur who started her own very successful company which specialized in planning galas. Unfortunately, she was set up to appear as though she was having an affair with a prominent politician which sent her biz plummeting. Enter...Simon to the rescue.

Did I mention that Simon is a red-headed, hot, chiseled, god? Well, he most definitely is. A great read with interesting, well-developed characters. Do Not Miss This!!

Better than the first

This is the second book of the Billionaires in the City book. This book sort of continues from the first as Simon was hired by the first books Hero as a consultant, but I am sure it can be read as a standalone since it really has no bearing on this book and the salient characters/plot of the first book is only vaguely alluded to once.

I really like Grace. She was strong headed and driven and unwilling to give up no matter what happened in both her work and her private life. Simon was a very interesting character. While I assume he is the billionaire in the "Billionaires in the city" he never acted like one. He is driven to take down Mark DuFord at any price and when Grace comes along she just may offer the perfect opportunity. Simon eventually realizes that "any price" may be too much when Grace is involved.

I actually liked this book more than the first. I am not sure who the 'boss' was that was being teased as Simon is a consultant so neither one is really the others boss. But I really liked both Grace and Simon. They both have a lot of heart and drive. Grace is clearly well loved by those around her and she puts her heart into her work. She is an event planner whose greatest joy is seeing her attendees truly have a good time. Simon while seemingly all business is driven by a personal tragedy, which just shows that in the end, he is really all heart too.

As an aside I did the subscribe to get a free story thing that is highlighted in the book details, but I never received anything so I guess its "limited time" is over.

Brilliant, empirically supported approach

Dr. Stosny has hit a grand slam home run, again. The healing approach in this book grows from the same fertile bed of research and clinical experience that made his boot camp for resentment, anger and abuse reduction so successful. It focuses on a betrayed person claiming and creating for him or herself a Healing Identity. This changes a betrayed person from a victim to an empowered person able to successfully choose improvement, healing, repair, recovery and growth over pain, suffering and shame. Betrayal can cause the betrayed person to feel inadequate and unlovable, the admission of which is too painful to admit. Stosny, as in the boot camp, provides practical steps that replace that loss of worth or value with ways to value yourself more, so much so that external adversity cannot touch the core of one's value. Stosny goes on to provide very wise counsel and steps when one betrayed seeks to love again, either in a new relationship, or in rebuilding a betrayed relationship. This reviewer is a marriage counselor, who has used Dr. Stosny's approach, now wonderfully set forth in this book, with many couples over the past years. It works, and works very effectively. This book is easily accessible by non-clinically trained readers, as it is written for the betrayed partner. Counselors and therapists will find it a valuable resource to grow their skills in helping couples and to give to couples with whom they work. This reviewer cannot recommend this book more highly. It warrants wide distribution to both audiences: couples and clinicians.

I liked it - but several weak areas

This was a helpful read with a really valuable and important premise. However, if you have history of trauma, this book should be used in conjunction with professional help. I really like the idea of building a healing identity and investing in your core value as a path to healing. Some things I thought were lacking: 1) the traumatic nature of betrayal was inadequately dealt with 2) self-compassion is a vital part of the recommendations in this book but it was not fleshed out well 3) there is was not enough instruction on how to help yourself when you feel vulnerable emotions. That being said I've gained something quite useful from reading this book and would recommend reading this while working with a professional. Betrayal is rarely something that can be worked through on your own.

Very Helpful

This book gave me a lot of useful ideas and exercises that I can put in place now to heal and recover from my spouses infidelity. It has helped me to focus more on the future and how I can move forward rather than obsess about the past.
