About the Author
Beth Bartolini-Salimbeni has more than twenty years experience teaching Italian at a secondary and post-secondary level. She was a test developer for several ETS exams in the areas of Spanish and Italian and was ETS’s representative to the national task force that developed the AP Italian curriculum. A College Board endorsed consultant in World Languages and Cultures, she teaches workshops and institutes to teachers of modern languages. She also served as a member of the World Languages Commission for Italian.

Must have book for learning Italian

This is a good book really worth having especially if you can get it at a reduced price.
I bought two used ones and they look quasi quasi/almost new. The CDs in both books had never been used or opened. They're in the back of the book covered up. You have to rip open the paper container they're in. There are molti dialogs and other stuff on the CDs.

The worst course EVER

If you're thinking about learning PROPER Italian, please buy some other book!! This is full of mistakes, unreal dialogues and translations from English that have nothing to do with REAL CORRECT Italian!! We don't say "regatta" "zucchini" or "fare cena" for God's sake, if you learn to speak like this you'll be most certainly laughed at! Please don't buy this book, honestly. I'm a professional teacher and a native speaker, I know what I'm talking about (unlike the author of this book, clearly).

Best used as a Travel Guide?

From a student's point of view, this book could be better if the Italian conversation text were correct and complete, and if the English translations more precisely represented the Italian spoken on the CDs. I have been studying Italian for two years, and the editorial and translational errors were easy to spot.
However, I enjoyed listening to the CDs and taxing my brain to write diary entries and answer the quizzes. The CDs are still in use in my car for pronunciation purposes, and to keep my "ear" in for Italian.
I learned a lot of new vocabulary from the range of conversations provided, and the grammar section at the back gave me new insight into the use of idiomatic expressions, and the many different uses of the word 'ci'.
The best part about the book for me is that it contains a lot of information, given in the conversations, about places to see and visit in Italy, as well as useful tips on booking accommodation in Italian, etc. The book has served me well as a guide on how to plan my next trip to Italy, but learning a language needs to be spread across a range of media, and I would not rely solely on this book for all my Italian language conversation learning.
PS if the authors want my transcript of their errors, I will be happy to pass it along.
