Alessandro Brambilla is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pisa and a process chemical engineer and application and quality supervisor at ALPHA Process Control. He was a full professor and head of the Chemical Engineering Department and director of the Chemical Engineering Program and PhD courses at the University of Pisa. Dr. Brambilla was also a visiting professor at the University of California, Davis, and at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. A riveting and absolutely gorgeous read

WHILE YOU'RE AWAY Part III is yet another beautifully written and exquisitely torturous installment in this serialized novel. In Part II, Sarah made her decision. In this set of six chapters, it's now up to Will to decide, to prove himself, to show Sarah whether his feelings for her are real.

Author Jessa Holbrook teases readers with her characters' indecision and inaction. She plants even more doubt into the relationship and begins to set the stage for their biggest obstacle yet - being apart. But she also continues to allow her character, Sarah, to grow and other parts of the story to progress.

While the main focus is the complicated, romantic and incredibly sexy love story, Sarah's friendships, family and passion for music play a significant part in this story. They add layers and interest and provide more to think about than just the roller-coaster that is Sarah and Will's relationship.

At the halfway point in this novel there are more questions than ever awaiting answers. Questions about what Sarah wants with and from both Will and Dave. Questions about Will's feelings, about their future together, about their future apart, about Sarah's family, about her and Dave's band Dasa. Questions that will hopefully be answered by this novel's end.

About the Author

Susan Miller-Cochran is Professor of English and Director of First-Year Writing at North Carolina State University. Her research focuses on instructional technology, ESL writing, and writing program administration. Her work has appeared in College Composition and Communication, Composition Studies, Computers and Composition, and Teaching English in the Two-Year College, and she is also an editor of Rhetorically Rethinking Usability (Hampton Press, 2009) and Strategies for Teaching First-Year Composition (NCTE, 2002). Before joining the faculty at NC State, she was a faculty member at Mesa Community College (AZ). She has served on the Executive Committee of the Conference on College Composition and Communication and the Executive Board of the Carolinas Writing Program Administrators. She currently serves as Vice President of the Council of Writing Program Administrators.

Roy Stamper is Senior Lecturer in English and former Associate Director of the First-Year Writing Program in the Department of English at North Carolina State University, where he teaches courses in composition, rhetoric, and American literature. He is also academic advisor to the department s Language, Writing, and Rhetoric majors. He has been recognized as an Outstanding Lecturer in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and is a recipient of NC State's New Advisor Award. Prior to his current appointment, he worked as a high school English teacher. He has presented papers at a number of local, regional, and national conferences, including the Conference of the Council of Writing Program Administrators and the Conference on College Composition and Communication.

Stacey Cochranis a Lecturer who teaches academic writing for undergraduates at North Carolina State University. He has also taught academic and creative writing at East Carolina University and Mesa Community College (AZ). He earned his M.A. in English from East Carolina University in 2001 with a concentration in Creative Writing. He was finalist for the 1998 Dell Magazines Award, a 2004 finalist for the St. Martin s Press/PWA Best First Private Eye Novel Contest, and finalist for the 2011 James Hurst Prize for fiction. He is an experienced videographer and interviewer who was the host of The Artist's Craft, a television show in Raleigh which featured interviews with many bestselling authors and literary scholars.

it's a pretty good guide for academic writing

I think that the author should have provided more examples of demonstrated writing situations. Other than that, it's a pretty good guide for academic writing.

Without alternative

The title is no exaggeration: This book is the THE fundamental source of traffic flow theory.

I know no book that is that comprehensive; the extensive coverage of macroscopic and microscopic traffic flow theory is supplemented by traffic demand modeling, intersection planning, traffic simulation...

I am not aware of another publication containing such a broad content. Regardless whether you are scientist in traffic modeling or practitioner, there is no alternative to this book. Although not updated since 1990, most is still valid today. A remarkable exception is the chapter about traffic simulation since the significant progress during the last two decades is not covered (-1 star).

Plus, the physical quality is very low: Soft-cover almost as thin as any page, printed in black & white, weak binding (some pages loose after only a week of careful reading). For approximately $100, I'd expect better. (-1 star).

Regardless of these handicaps, I strongly recommend this book. There is no better. I hope, though, there will be an updated edition one day.

Does the job

I bought this book, Traffic Flow Fundamentals by Adolf D. May, for my CE 571 Traffic Flow Analysis class. As for the material in the book, I find the author's style of writing to be quite helpful. However, unless you are really careful with the book as you read it, the binding falls apart REALLY easily. I cracked my book's spine when I first opened it trying to lay it flat on the table and my classmate's book has all of the pages he has read falling out of it so he had a similar experience with it. After cracking the binding once, I was able to avoid future cracking by making sure not to apply any pressure to the spine and only open the book just enough to read all of the page, but I know no everyone likes to read that way. Maybe the hardback version would be better, if there is one.

I bring this up only for resale value since many students try to sell their books back.

Good book, bad quality!

It can be a good textbook for your study. However, the pages start to come off after two months of moderate usage! I understand that it is a paperback book but the spine should still hold up better. I certainly hope I just got a lime this time. But as far as I have experienced, the quality is clearly not as impressive as the contents. If you decide to keep the book and refer back frequently for a long time, I would suggest you buy a hardcover version. Service from Amazon is as good as usual.

What's Your Design?

Imagine a recipe for understanding your true nature, drawn from four ancient wisdom traditions: one part astrology, one part Kabbalah, one part I Ching and one part chakra system. Mix them together in a vat of science and spirituality and voila: you have the Human Design! A system and set of tools for realizing the mechanics and code of our authentic self: one we carry through life.

Over the decades I have had, perhaps, a dozen readings from astrologers, psychics, and palm readers, as well as having dabbled on my own in numerology, face reading, tarot cards, the Enneagram and other systems for self-awareness. Each has been useful, insightful, and revealing in its own way, and in spite of the differences of each model, there remains a constant thread of personality traits, inclinations, predispositions, potentialities, and behaviors that I recognize as "me." Consequently, this is my metaphorical litmus test for any new model or system for self-realization: do the insights resonate with what I have previously learned and intuitively know about myself?

Human Design definitely does resonate, and what's more, there is something quite magical about how it invigorates the soul. I literally felt--and continue to feel--more energetic, and have gained more clarity about who I am. New awareness gleaned from just a few hours of reading the insights my "design" offers continue to bounce around in my psyche, inspiring and affirming my thoughts and feelings. I can only imagine how much more powerful a reading would be.

It might be more accurate to say that most of what I learned was not new to me, but presented in a new light, one that makes sense and speaks to my soul. As a "new system" for self-understanding, it takes some time to absorb the layers of traits presented from the "9 centers, 36 channels, and 64 gates" that make up the life chart. But for me, it was "zone time:" timeless and completely absorbing. I wrote out several pages of notes on my life chart, which in itself will offer another layer of insight when I return for another dose of the inside story: what did I choose to notice and focus on--or not?

Human consciousness is becoming more clearly aware of itself; it's evolving. Human Design is a reflection of that evolution, mirroring the movement and sophistication of what I call "the art of being human."

A good introduction to an incomplete esoteric system

I was initially floored by the insight offered in Chetan Parkyn's book. My individualistic approach to life, frustrating split between intellectual and professional pursuits and masked emotional nature were clearly delineated in this easy-to-follow introduction to the Human Design System. When I pulled up the charts of former romantic partners - who on the surface of things shared few similarities - they fit a particular compatible Design profile. Similarly, relationship charts accurately displayed both magnetism and challenges.

My appetite for Human Design whetted I spent a few months learning how to read 'body graphs', taking courses on HDS, analyzing charts of friends and family and exploring having readings done by different analysts. I have an enthusiast's working knowledge of astrology, i ching and the chakra system and was quickly able to identify how these influences were incorporated into Parkyn's book - which is heavily tilted to astrological analysis.

Ultimately, I found HDS exceptionally valuable for a snapshot of relationship dynamics and less so for the complexity inherent in individual personalities. In terms of providing practical guidance in life path and decision-making processes it is simplistic. Each HD analyst was fiercely loyal to his or her own school - some in starry-eyed cult fashion. Their recommendations and guidance often differed, one pushing me to change my career path and commit to her expensive life coaching program. Other analysts, perhaps more ethical, validated my life choices. And so on.

I'm perhaps going into more detail than necessary but there isn't much online reviewing Ra Uru Hu's work or experience with the Human Design community as a whole. For clarity I didn't take courses from the author though one of the analysts I tried was one of the author's certified students.

All in all, this book is a fun introduction to HDS. Enjoy it, use it as a self-development tool and play around with Centers, Channels, Gates and especially Design Profiles ... but don't drink the Kool-Aid.

The Gift of Design

If I had been in the library or online when I saw this book, I probably wouldn't of bought it. The same situation cannot be said for my aunt though who purchased the book for me as a Christmas present. I have spent a good deal of time in the past couple years searching for my purpose in life and how that can lead me to my ideal job. My aunt purchased this book in hopes that I could gain a little more knowledge about myself and what I needed to accomplish. It's amazing to me how often I can ask life a question and receive back a valid response from it.

It took me a few months before I decided to start reading Human Design since I had a stack of other "interesting" material to go through. Eventually the day came when I had the house all to myself, so I grabbed the book from the stack, sat down on my futon and jumped right in. Chetan Parkyn begins the book by explaining where the concept originated from and how it works. I usually don't scrutinize where the concept comes from whenever I read metaphysical self-help books that deal with subjects like numerology, astrology, etcetera, as long as the program is accurate with whatever it is trying to explain. After reading this section, Parkyn asks the reader to go online to download a small file that will calculate the type of person you are by taking your date, time and location of your birth. I continued reading after receiving the chart that explained my conscious and unconscious traits and became completely entranced by the material of this book. For the past 5-7 hours I wouldn't leave the bed unless my stomach was gruesomely pleading for some sort of food. I first searched through the pages to learn about my conscious characteristics, the things I already knew, and the material seemed accurate and helpful. I then went on to the unconscious characteristics, but I wasn't excited to read about them because I believed they wouldn't be as impacting as the previous material. When I started reading about my unconscious traits, I felt like I was engulfed in information that had been a part of me all this time. It's almost like sitting down with yourself while he explains who you are, but what you didn't realize. This part of the book really helped me with understanding myself and it gave me this type of energy and enthusiasm that wasn't there before. Let me just say that before this, I had a huge problem going out into public places such as restaurants. I always felt like EVERYONE was starring at me and it bothered me a lot. Almost so much that I wanted to leave the place as soon as I walked in. After I read this book, that problem and others in my life completely disappeared. I knew who I was, I acted like myself and became satisfied with the situations I was put in. This book brings so many things to the table and allows people to address the important things about themselves when it comes to personality. If you have any questions about who you are or need a helpful book that will keep your head up, Human Design is worth the price and effort. It will make you feel different. It will make you feel like... yourself.

Learn from one of the best!

Tim Kelly provides you with the information and techniques to create black and white portraits that will set you apart. You will learn the process to create art rather than simple snapshots. In this book, he provides you with 60 lighting setups, the ideas behind them, and samples of the results. If you are looking to take your portraiture to the next level, then this book will be a great help in accomplishing that.

Have you ever wanted to be the assistant to a Master Photographer? Take the time and study Kelly’s latest book, Portrait Mastery in Black and White, where you will take a passionate journey into the artist’s studio, his head, and his heart, learning how to think like one of the most accomplished photographers working in the industry today.

Kelly’s portraits are simple, direct; yet make powerful statements, putting aside the overstuffed manner of so much celebrated photography seen in today’s digital color portraiture. He likes to work like a painter against neutral backgrounds or simple window light locations with minimal equipment, while he achieves a brilliant encounter with his subjects with relaxed poses creating his signature style.

Kelly is also a consummate darkroom craftsmen and digital artist. His multiple awards, and impressive clientele are not only from his intensity in the camera room, they are a result of his vision and preparation behind his camera and in the postproduction efforts that are transparent to the viewer on the final print.

The portraits are all clearly explained and accompanied with useful lighting diagrams. Posing and Lighting, tonal values, exposure control, lens selection, background choices, style, and the psychology of the lens, are explained in this
very informative and eye opening publication on the black and white portraiture.

Tim Kelly is a leader in the photography industry - not only for his stunning and impeccable black and white portrait work, but in business, marketing and sales. I was fortunate to be directed to Tim Kelly's work in the beginning of my own portrait career almost 20 years ago, and I learn from him every time I hear him teach, and now with his Portrait Mastery book. I love the stories and delivery that Tim gives to each of the portraits presented in the book. It keeps the book interesting along with the technical lighting instruction.
This book should be on every portrait photographers shelf to go back to again and again.
